Group 2/Lesson 2: “The Classical and the Romantics” (Page 148-151)

1.
Art has been around for centuries. Some of the most popular types of art include Neoclassical Art
and Romantic Art, both of which were influenced by the Greeks and Romans. Neoclassical Art
began in the mid-1700s and Romantic Art began shortly after that, in the late-18th century.
Neoclassical and Romantic Art are often confused, though they are not the same. While
Neoclassical Art is more unemotional and political, Romantic Art focuses mainly on the natural
and mysterious aspects of life.
2.
Notable Neoclassic Artists:
1. Ingres - He is known for such mythological studies such as Oedipus and the
Sphinx and Jupiter and Thetis.  He also did portraits such as Madame Riviere and La
Grande Odalisque. His works were antitheses of the colorism and emotionalism of the
succeeding Romantic school of painting.
2. David - His brand was of historical paintings and it shifted the excesses of Rococo
toward the Classical Greek and Roman. His paintings are polished, sculpted and
contoured as seen in The Lictors Bringing to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons, The Death of
Marat, and Napoleon crossing the Alps. He was also able to paint for an emperor, radical
revolutionaries, and the royalty. You can see how influential he is in that era because he
painted a lot of powerful people.
3. Canova - He had Rococo and late Baroque works despite being one of the fathers of
Neoclassical art. His artworks include: Perseus, Cupid andPsyche, Napoleon statue,
and Pauline Borghese sculpture.
4. Smirke - He was the forefront of Greek revival in architecture. He was one of the people
that brought Greek elements back to architecture. His most famous work is the British
Museum’s main block and facade, which uses the Greek Ionic order. It was also inspired
by the King’s Library.
5. Adam - His architecture was inspired by the Classical Greek and Roman design. With his
brother, they developed a new style called the Adamesque style. His designs were used
for interiors of country mansions such as Kenwood House and Syon House.
Notable Romantic Artists:
1. Gericault - He was influential in the emergence and growth of Romantic art in France. He
made military statements for Napoleon, but The Raft of the Medusa is his best work as it
captures raw and deep emotions.
2. Delacroix - Also known as a “Master of Color”. He searched for exotic in his travels in
North Africa. He is known for painting: Death of Sardanapalus, Liberty Leading the
People, and Medea about to Kill her Children.
3. Goya - The Spanish painter was an important figure in the evolution of contemporary
aesthetic sensibility. Goya observed society and recorded in his paintings his comments
about the country’s political and moral crisis. He is best known for The Burial of the
Sardine, The Third of May 1808, and Saturn Devouring His Sons.
4. Rodin - A Romantic/Realist sculptor known for his talent to model complex surfaces in
clay. Some of his famous works are The Age of Bronze, The Thinker, The Kiss, and The
Burghers of Calais.
5. Barry - Barry was a major architect of the English Gothic Revival, known for designing
the Palace of Westminster, Highclere Castle, and other renowned buildings in England.
His designs were influenced by Italy and he was a pioneer of the mid-Victorian and
Anglo-Italian architectural style.
Neoclassicism and Romanticism in the Philippines:
 Juan Luna, Spoliarium
 Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Las Virgenes Critianas Expuestas al Populacho
 Guillermo Tolentino, Oblation in Unibersidad ng Pilipinas
Neoclassicism was evident in Philippine Architectures. Filipino architects have designed
educational and government buildings. Some of the architectures are Facade of the old
Legislative Building, Manila City Hall’s clock tower, Manila Central Post Office, and Our Lady
of Atonement.
