Typhoon Ondoy

A natural disaster is the case that a natural danger occurs and seriously
damages a community. A natural disaster usually leaves behind some economic harm
along with the possibility of loss of life or property damage. There are a lot of natural
disasters that our country is experiencing, such as earthquakes and typhoons.
According to PAGASA, the average number of tropical cyclones that enter the
Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is 20, and 8 or 9 of them cross the Philippines
every year.

One of the typhoons that hit the Philippines is typhoon Ketsana, better known as
typhoon ondoy. Typhoon ondoy is one of the super typhoons that hit Luzon 13 years
ago. One of the most affected cities is Marikina City, and it has affected its economy.
According to Tuano, P.A., Muyrong, M., & Clarete, R. Prices (2018) prices for both
producers and consumers dropped significantly. Changes in the real exchange rate or
the cost of domestic commodities in relation to the cost of imported items are what
generate this pattern. Prices of regional goods in the city fell due to a lack of demand.
the weekly city GDP, the household income of a representative, and the expenditures of
both the local and national governments. Each week, the city's industries generate
roughly PHP 1.2 billion in GDP. The city's GDP decreased in the first week before
progressively improving up to the seventh week. By the seventh week, it had returned to
its pre-flooding level after suffering a total loss of PHP 2.18 billion during the adjustment
period.

The mayor of Marikina City, Marcelino "Marcy" Teodoro, applauded Benhur

Abalos Jr.'s decision to designate permanent personnel for dredging operations and the
rebuilding of dikes in order to prevent further floods in the city (Caliwan, 2021). Further
measures are being adopted by the City Government of Marikina, particularly during
"habagat" and typhoon seasons, under the leadership of Mayor Marcy Teodoro. In low-
lying areas, it has also started to install tools for measuring rainfall and water levels. To
stop the Marikina River from overflowing and drowning the neighboring neighborhoods,
the local government is currently putting a project to enlarge and deepen it into action. It
is also researching a dikes' proposed design (Lim, 2019). The City Government plans to
upgrade the drainage systems in a variety of places around Marikina, including those
along Jacamar, A. Santos, and Katipunan streets. In a month, the Jacamar Street
drainage improvement project is anticipated to be finished (Castillo, 2019).

The actions of the local government are highly effective, as we all know that
Marikina is prone to flooding when a typhoon hits the city. These actions are great help
to avoid and to lessen the flood that may occur when there's a typhoon. Although
Marikeños are used to flooding and have enough knowledge when it comes to
typhoons, Marikeños are also disciplined when it comes to waste management, which is
also a big help in avoiding further disaster. Furthermore, having citizens who are
disciplined and have a care on their environment is a treasure, as is having a mayor
who cares about his community.
