Culture - Overall Strengths
● Asian countries do not value extreme individualism (NY Times, 1993)
● Heavy focus and importance on family
● Revere education
● Belief that hard work is a virtue
● Teamwork is important

Culture - Perceptions of Those with Disabilities
● Differences in what qualifies as a disability
● Disabilities are looked down upon

“Asian Americans greatly value concepts that encourage hard work, saving face and striving for
excellence. These values seem antithetical and counter-cultural to the defining features of Asian
tradition, since productions and outcomes are equivalent to value and worth. Asian values that
encourage hard work, saving facem and striving for excellence mainly stem from Confucian values
that emphasize diligence to promote and maintain a sense of self. In light of these values in
mainstream American operations, Asian Americans are taught to persevere despite challenges,
obstacles, and setbacks. With this expectation, it leaves little room for mistakes or room for learned
that would otherwise be perceived as “failures.” Viewing this with certain policies within American
society such as the American Disabilities Act (ADA), it is understandable why the disability culture
and its associated values do not align perfectly with beliefs and traditions of Asian Culture.”
(Journal of Teaching Disability Studies, n.d.)
Asian History
As seen in American school systems
History
● Asian Americans were and still are ill-served in American Schools
● Asian students are not learning about their heritage in schools
○ When they learn about their heritage it is typically in a negative context
■ I.e. the Bombing of Pearl Harbor, and internment of Japanese Americans following
the bombing of Pearl Harbor (Holcombe, 2021)

“Kiana Kenmotsu was in the sixth grade when she first read about her own history in school. It was
one story about the internment of Japanese Americans, a wrong suffered by her grandfather, but
now 18-year-old Kenmotsu said it changed everything for her, ‘Every time (Asian history) was
brought up, I felt a high,’ she said. ‘History is something you connect with. I was never able to
connect with it.’ “ (Holcombe, 2021)
History (cont.)

Progress
● Organizations like Learning for Justice have intentions to help teachers across America
become aware of the lack of Asian representation in school curriculum
● They plan to help provide teachers with resources they need to teach ALL their students about
Asian history and make meaningful connections to the history
● In Midwestern States such as Illinois, legislators have introduced new legislation like Teaching
Equitable Asian American Community History (TEAACH) to integrate Asian contributions to
society and Asian history into the standard curriculum (TEAACH act.)

Teachers and Schools
What can we do to help?
Actions to help students be
successful
● Give each student equal amounts of attention and help

● Ask them, as an individual, if they need help

● Create a welcoming environment

● Remind all students it’s okay to make mistakes and errors

● Teach the students to be respectful and kind (model this as well)

● Mix up the groups to promote branching out

● Help all students feel like they belong

● Read books about Asian Americans

● Teach about Asian American culture and history

What do Asian parents want for their
children?
● They tend to want their children to succeed far past their peers

● They typically want schools to “bump them up a grade” or give them harder work to do

● They want their children to do well because they might not have has the best opportunities

and they want to give them the best life they can
Things to Consider
● Students may be embarrassed to ask for help, don’t assume they understand if they don’t

have questions

● Their parents may be very hard on them academically, remind them you are proud of the work

they produce

● They may be suffering from bullying and mockery, especially since the start of Covid-19. So,

make sure your classroom is a safe place

● They have a higher rate for suicidal thoughts, keep an eye out of signs

● Some parents are not familiar with the school’s procedures, reach out to the families to reduce

barriers

How do Asian students tend to learn best
● Typically by listening, fully absorbing what is being taught

● Sometimes they don’t feel like they have the “right” to ask questions until they completely

understand all aspects of it

● They tend to struggle to take responsibility in their learning

● They expect the teacher to tell them exactly what to do

● Lecture based lessons are most beneficial
