What is Kinship?
Kinship refers to the “web of social relationships” that humans as a par of family, which is the
smallest unit of society.
Web of social relationships mean is pagkakamag- anak, or the connection or relationship between

DESCENT RULES

1. CLAN – it is a group of people having common ancestor. For example, my family’s surname kay

iyang papa nga akong lolo nga gikan pajuds, lolo sa akong lolo and so on. So clan is a group of people
having common ancestor.
2. PHRATIES – by the word expansion or expanding of related clans or a clan or kinship group consisting
of a number of families claiming descent from a common ancestor. For example, usa ka tribo nga
nagconsist ug daghan nga clan or families but still they are related and they have common ancestor,
pareha ra sila tanan ug ancestors.
3. MOEITY- so pareha sa phratries ang moiety kay a group of clans or families pud but but they don’t
descent from a common ancestor. It means di sila related, di sila parehag ancestors.
4. BILATERAL DESCENT – so it is a trace of kinship that ties on both matrilineal and patrilineal discent.
