GAME OVERVIEW

I have to be completely honest in this report and say this game lacked any quality with Dover often relied on set pieces and corners for which they put all theirtallest and
the ball whatsoever.Dover came to be physical and play direct and it worked for them, strongestplayers up every single time, but thequality of delivery was again very poor.
butitkilled any fluency in the game.Always compact and very narrow without the ball, it Usually in a game I would highlight more individual technicalities from players, but sadly
was difficult to break them down and especially after Havant were reduced to 10 men today the quality was poorfrom Dover, and they were few and far between.Dover aren’t
in the first half.Dover simply wanted to rely on Effiong and Allen by playing this way, in a position to play attractive football and it shows. Its simple, its direct and aside from
but they had no qualityin the final thirdto create anything for them, which left Effiong un the front two and full backs, they will not have many touches of the ball.
effective for long periods and Allen for all his work rate, was just chasing scraps himself.
The pitch was soft and slippery, and players were off balance the whole game. The
pitch cut up very quicklyand any possession was easily lost or broken downwhich led to
players retaining ridged positioning and static movement.

REASON LOKKO • Dover set up in a 4-4-2 instead of the 5-3-1 at home vs Bromley
2 3 • Dover also lined up4-4-2 away at Wrexham
MCNAMARA DEBAYO
• Gomiswas missing due to a red card suspension against Bromley.
• Dan McNamara comes in at right back (on loan from Millwall)
• Even with an extra man, Dover stayed with the same formation, and just looked for overlaps
with the extra man.

1
WALKER I watched Dover closely warming up and it was very different to many others ive watched. It was
very laboured and slow, nothing really too engaging or energetic, and compared to Havant it
looked very chilled out. They just had a few one touch passing drills. Some stretching and light
posession. But coming away from the game I realise that this actually benefited their start to the
6 5
REASON LOKKO game to suit their style. They have very strong players, big in physique and given the sofness
2 3 of the pitch, an intensive warm up would have seen them tired in the latter stages of the game,
MCNAMARA DEBAYO which actually happened. Despite having ten men, Havant were the stronger finishing the game
and their speed and agility changed the swing of it in the latter stages.

Very few of their players had fluid movements over the game and aside from Allenand
McNamaradidn’t really appear to have the endurance.

Dover came out at kick off very strong and quick and bullied Havant for the first 20 minutes. It
4 18 worked. (Havant had a very energetic and high intensity warm up and I think this hindered their
DOE LEWIS start)
7 8
BRUNDEL NORTEY
Out of possesion -
Without the ball, Dover retained very compact discipline and shifted their shape across the
pitch depending on where Havant played the ball, making it difficult for havant to breakdown or
get behind. They only pressed for the first 20 minutes of the game to get a foothold and then
were happy to sit and retain shape.Dovers physical shape and presence meant this was pre
determined to help them manage the game over the 90. Lewis and Doe would sit happily with
one droppng, while Norteyand Brundletucked in very narrow and central

9 10 Substitutes -
ALLEN EFFIONG Only Taylor showed any real impact with his direct running with the ball, but took too long to
release which nullified any space Allen or Effiong had.Pavey didn’t really see the ball nor did
Modeste. Little influence

PLAYER ANALYSIS
1 Mitch Walker 1.88M had little to do during the game. His warm up spent a long time with balls driven at his midriffwhere he displayed solid catchingand little movement with his feet. Spent very little time on
crossing which surprised me.He worked on his left side at the near post and appeared strong. During the warm up and centralised team shooting, he was weakto his right-handside and seemed
mentally effected. His kicking was always long and direct to Effiong, his footwork was poor, and he needs pressing quick as he has poor distribution and decision making under pressure.I highly
suspect he is poor on his crossing.

5 Kevin Lokko SLIM ATHLETIC BUILD Made a really positive debut and playing high up the pitch, pinning Havant back. Always wants to support and hog the touchline. Always wanted to produce a whipped
cross and either get too the byline or support the attack. Regularly tried to be positive at all times and played it simple. Dover’s Best player

8 Mitch Brundle 1.83M 70KG on loan from Cheltenham town. Strong and athletic build but with no mobility or fluency on the ball. Liked to push forwards and made positive positional options, but his lack of skill
and technique meant he gave the ball away lots. Win the ball off him and get in behind him quickly down the right.

10 Jamie Allen 1.78M 78KG STOCKY. Set piece taker for everything and on both sides. Wasn’t troubled by Havant at all. Played purely directly to Allen and Effiong. Set pieces from Free kicks were often straight
and high. Variable delivery in corners which is displayed in diagrams. Without the ball, brings everybody in very narrow.

12 Inih Effiong 1.8M STOCKY BUILD. Too strong for Havant forwards but not really troubled. Uses his presence and looks for the tackle, rather than standing ground. Always up for set pieces in the box. Right
footed and another who plays direct and bypasses midfield. Looks for Allen and Effiong then pushes up. Not very mobile.

18 Nortei Nortey 1.88M TALL ATHLETIC. Can play with both feet. A physical presence for Dover and won everything in the air. Another direct player who will play just play safe and direct. Rarely played to mid-
fields’feet, butdid work well with Debayo, combiningto create down the left. Rarely troubled. Always goes up for set pieces in varied positions.

20 Dan Mcnamara all athletic build, Left midfielder who wasn’t too adventurous. Often overlapped by Debayo. Ranabout lots but without any real impact or discipline. Didn’t command the ball or have any real influ-
ence for Dover. A very quiet game and substituted on 65 for Taylo

26 Scott Doe 1.8M STRONG BUILD Commanded Centre midfield and retained compact without the ball. Good positional discipline, good anticipation and bossed his opposing players from the off and became
comfortable after that. Havant sending off gave him more space. Looks to play in Allento Feet and play through the lines. Didn’t give the ball away much. A controlled performance

9 Stewart Lewis 1.85M STRONG BUILD Stayed really compact with Lewis whenever Havant had the ball. Picked up the second ball well. With Lewisthey held good shape in front of Lokkoand Reason which made
it difficult for Havant to penetrate. Thus, they didn’t need to tackle. Always a threat when in the box for set pieces in various positions.

28 Josh Debayo 1.79M ATHLETIC AND LEAN. One of Dover’s few positive players. Works his socks of pressing defenders and thekeeper. Plays on the shoulderright/leftand due to Dover’s direct style it suits him.
He is prepared to gamble and anticipate. Can play in tight spaces around the box and with either feet. Went through on one on one but pulled back which saw the defender dismissed. Likes to
stay central and between both Centre backs. Quick

30 Jai Reason 1.9M TALL ATHLETIC. After a bright start I was very disappointed in his performance. Clumsy on the ball and often off balance running with it. He’s clearly an impact striker who likes to shoot of
one/two touches into space. Struggled with too many touches and poor decision making. If he can’t get a shot off and his back is to goal, he struggles

SET PLAY ANALYSIS 1

DEFENSIVE FREE KICKS

Dover on defending free kicks always kept a high line and if they could would always stay
outside the box and as high as they could go. They held a very rigid and straightlineto play an
offside trap if they could.

By using this high line,it kept it away from their keeper who it appears doesn’t like handling
crosses.

Dover are tall and physical.

I suggest and crosses are low and whipped behind and towards the penalty spot and making
their defenders turn.

Or play short quick free kicks and avoid direct balls if you haven’t got the targets available. This
willthrow them out of shape.

SET PLAY ANALYSIS 2

ATTACKING FREE KICKS

This was a common trait for all set pieces Dover had. Brundle Takes Free kick on either side.

Always has a man short

All players 6ft plus or physical swarm the box and into a pack or line.

Brundle simply plays direct sraight ball diagonally into the advaning pack.

Usually aimed for lokko or Effiong

SET PLAY ANALYSIS 3

ATTACKING CORNERS

Dover did win a lot of corners during the game anddo get the ball into tight spaces at the by-line.

Cornersfrom the right -

Bundle,always takes Set pieces.

From right hand side he always put them under the crossbar with all Dover’s tallest players
around the keeper.

Corners from the Left -

Bundle -Out swingers

Tallest players form on the edge of 18 yard box but always hit to the back of the group towards
Lokko or Effiong

Defensive positioning -
They never left any centre backs in defence. McNamara, Lewis or Doe were genuinely left on
the Half way line. There is scope for a good counter attack if you can win the ball early and your
keeper has good handling skills.

GENERAL ANALYSIS

Copyright PFSA Education Ltd11How many players do they have in midfield? Away from Home it appears they use a 4-4-2But play very narrow with allfour almost central at times. Full backs
overlap

How deep do the flanks play? Attacking or defending? Attacking, (full backs)McNamaraand Debayowill push high. While defending they will tuck in close to each centre
half

How tall is the GK and how is he with crosses? 1.88M wit athletic slight build. Wasn’t tested during the game on crosses and as highlighted above, didn’t really do
any crossing during the warm up, only half a dozen.

Does the GK throw the ball out and if so who is willing to accept it? He likes to kick the ball out from his hands. High and long, noreal control in direction. Very predictable

Do they build up from the back, through midfield or direct to the final 3rd Dover play direct from the back into the front line or channels. They weren’t technically mobile enough to play
possession through the middle.

How well and early do they pressure the ball Dover pressed very well for the first 20 mins and were very physical. After the sending offDover, were happy to sit
and allow Havant the ball and keep shape.

Do they have any Quick players McNamara(RB) and Allen(CF) both nimble and quick. Effionga threat if allowed space to shoot and turn

Do they have any aggressive players Lokko, Effiong, Debayo, Bundle, Lewis, Reason, Doeall very Physical

Is there anyone frightened of a challenge No

Were there any penalties and if so who took them and where did he place it No

Is there anybody who did not play today that should have? Gomis–Suspended after straight red against Bromley last week.
SCOUTING REPORT

CONCLUSION

Due to Dovers Physical approach and current good form I believe a patient approach would be Debayo and McNamarapush high as full backs but Debayois a weakness with his technical ability
best suited to inflict damage on Dover. Focussing on the second half. on the ball. If they cant get back then it will open up large spaces and push Dovers central areas
into parts of the pitch they arent comfortable in.
Game management -
Play through the thirds I really supect that their Keeper Walkerhas weakness in crossing and that’s why they didn’t warm
him up that way, plus when pressed on back passes he is all over the place and uncomfortable.
0-30 Minutes – Be compact, resilliant solid
30-60 Minutes – Open up until HT then assess what they have to offer
60-90 Minutes – Introduce speed, agility and width, players who can run with the ball and be
direct, potentially play various 3-4-3, 4-1-2-3 -4-3-3 they will ware down physically.

They will probably come out strong and physical again as that is there strength currently to get
hold of the game.

Their physical attributes meant they struggled in the latter stages of the game. They were up
against it in the Last 10/15 minutes with Havant who’s endurance and energy came through to
open them up even with ten men. Doverlooked to bully Havant early on and this is clearly how
they have been building confidence and intimidating opposition.

Dover stay compact and are hard to break down, but Havant just didnt have a good start to the
game to shift the ball quick enough to either flank and especiallywhen down toten men.

I belive if you can inject pace and agility into the game from 60 minutes or even change formation
to a 3-5-2 or 4-1-2-3 you will really be able to penetrate a worn down team by moving the ball
quick. Hold up Effiongand ensure your Centre backs are covering for Allenwho looks to get behind
on the direct through balls
