I work under close supervision of a consultant psychiatrist, in a supporting capacity to
my consultant, doing the following:
Morning handover.

Sessions with the family members of in-patients.
I am involved in taking care of patients across the DSM criteria. To name a few -
Mood disorders, Schizophrenia and Psychotic disorders, Bipolar Disease,
Anxiety disorders, Substance abuse, Behavioural disorders, Personality and

We had weekly classes of Psychiatry and Psychology which I regularly attended.
I get the opportunity to teach my junior colleagues about Psychiatry – on how to
do patient interviews (role playing), mental state examination, prescribing
psychiatric drugs, counselling suicide risk assessment and basics of mental
health management.
In the OPD we see cases with minor mental health issues, most commonly
depression and behavioural disorders along with follow up cases and referrals.
We admit patients with poisoning and overdose (Opioid, Paracetamol) from other
departments including ER. We do a suicide risk assessment, counsel them and
admit them if needed.
We also arrange community mental health camps. We use this opportunity to
educate the public about the importance of mental health hygiene, when to seek
help and counter the taboo associated with Psychiatric patients.
This experience in a third world country has made me think long and hard about the
best utilization of scarce resources. I also had to think about the pricing of the
medication and whether the patient could afford to buy those medications.
This job has given me a clearer understanding of social issues that may affect mental
health and how we being healthcare workers can help.
