Job description:
A normal day for me in the department of Psychiatry consists of:
I work under close supervision of a consultant psychiatrist, in a supporting capacity to
my consultant, doing the following:

 Morning handover.
 Individualized patient consultation-maintaining full confidentiality.
 Preparing for the morning round.
 Checking patients in OPD (with a Consultant).
 Presenting my cases in the ward round.
 Following up on orders from the ward round.
 Attending counselling sessions.
 Maintaining patient record.
 Writing discharge summaries.
 Mental state examination of admitted patients.
 Suicide risk assessment.
 Role playing exercises.
 Patient discussions with Psychologist on call.
 Answering calls from other departments.
 Sessions with the family members of in-patients.
 I am involved in taking care of patients across the DSM criteria. To name a few -
Mood disorders, Schizophrenia and Psychotic disorders, Bipolar Disease,
Anxiety disorders, Substance abuse, Behavioural disorders, Personality and
Sleep disorders.
 We had weekly classes of Psychiatry and Psychology which I regularly attended.
 I get the opportunity to teach my junior colleagues about Psychiatry – on how to
do patient interviews (role playing), mental state examination, prescribing
psychiatric drugs, counselling suicide risk assessment and basics of mental
health management.
 In the OPD we see cases with minor mental health issues, most commonly
depression and behavioural disorders along with follow up cases and referrals.
 We admit patients with poisoning and overdose (Opioid, Paracetamol) from other
departments including ER. We do a suicide risk assessment, counsel them and
admit them if needed.
 We also arrange community mental health camps. We use this opportunity to
educate the public about the importance of mental health hygiene, when to seek
help and counter the taboo associated with Psychiatric patients.

This experience in a third world country has made me think long and hard about the
best utilization of scarce resources. I also had to think about the pricing of the
medication and whether the patient could afford to buy those medications.
This job has given me a clearer understanding of social issues that may affect mental
health and how we being healthcare workers can help.

Brief job description:
 Taking patient history, performing relevant clinical examinations, making

and Trainee residents. I had the opportunity to see a wide range of patients with
acute medical illnesses. To name a few - Acute coronary syndrome, Heart
failure, DKA, Stroke, Meningitis, Pneumonia, Asthma and COPD exacerbation,
Upper GI Bleed, Gout, Acute Renal failure, Gastroenteritis, Electrolyte
Imbalance, Poisoning and overdose, other Infectious and Haematological
diseases.
 In addition this, I had a 1:3 on-call schedule for an unselected take.

House Officer (FY1 Grade), Neurosurgery Department, Pakistan Institute of

01/04/2018 till 30/06/2018.
 My role during this 6 month rotation in two surgical departments, included: -
Taking patient history, performing relevant clinical examinations, making
differentials and formulating a management plan. Discussing patients with my
seniors before the ward round, attending the ward round, presenting my cases
and noting down the orders, following orders from the rounds, clerking
 We were given complete bays to handle, to keep up-to-date records, labs,
histories, examinations and assessment of all patients. In the surgery OT, I
observed major surgeries and assisted in minor surgeries. I learned stitching and
suturing, subcutaneous cysts and lipoma removal, nail extraction, and assisted in
open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy and Appendectomy, Herniotomy and
mesh repair, Diabetic foot surgery, Knee amputation and Thyroid surgery.
 In the Neurosurgery OT I observed procedures like burr hole craniotomy to
remove EDH, craniectomy, tumour removal, endoscopic brain cyst removal,
tracheostomy, deep brain stimulation in Parkinson’s disease patients, endoscopic
skull base surgery, awake craniotomies, endoscopic spinal surgery, advanced
spinal instrumentation and neuro-endovascular work and many more interesting
procedures.
 In the A&E we managed patients in teams based on ATLS guidelines and
followed the ABCE management. I also learned how to perform CPR on critical
patients.
 How to assess emergency CT Scans and Interpret Brain and Spine MRI’s at a
foundation grade level was taught to us during the time as well.
 A large component of this rotation was the process of discussing disease
prognosis with our patients and in some cases breaking bad news to them
regarding terminal illnesses.
 In our health care setting, the recovery phase of treatment is mainly left to the
junior doctors to review and do the wound management unless a serious
complication occurs. My other duties included outpatient clinics twice a week and
1:4 on-call for acute take.
 I regularly attended Post-op ward round.
 I did Post-op wound care including dressing and drains.
 I also counselled the patients and their attendants regarding wound care at home

PROFILE:
Having a keen interest in the high intensity environments of the hospital, I am an
enthusiastic and fast acting doctor. Always aspiring to be the first person to provide
immediate and effective relief to the patient. My hands-on skills divide me from the
pack, with undeterred, quick decision making and steadfastness in the face of adversity
being my forte. My aim is to work at SHO grade in the NHS to gain essential experience
and footing in the NHS system. I am looking forward to my first NHS job in a growing
and learning environment. During the course of my life, I have had leadership roles, I
was the Class Representative and Arts Director in my medical school’s Arts and
Photography society and I was my class representative as well as House officer in-
charge during my internship year and all that has taught me how to face challenges with
an open, calm mind and think things through as a collective unit with my peers.

 During my internship year till now I enthusiastically take part in teaching clinical
examination, method of history taking, assessment of acutely unwell patients,
venepuncture, IV cannulation, catheterization (male and female), arterial tap,
removal of surgical site drains, assessment and management of Pre and Post-op
patients, referrals and electronic discharges to my juniors and colleagues.
 I have been a tutor and mentor to medical students as member of a peer support
program at Quaid-e-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur
 After getting good grades in O and A levels I have taught Chemistry and Physics
to O and A-level students before entering medical school.
