INTRODUCTION

This lesson is designed to give you the understanding of a software, how to select
appropriate software and learn how to get software onto your computer according to task
assigned and required outcome.

WHAT TO KNOW

What is Computer software?

Computer software is anything that can be stored electronically. The term is used to
contrast with computer hardware (the physical objects); unlike hardware, software cannot be
touched. Hardware and software require each other and neither has any value without the
other.

What is the role of Computer software in a computer system?

Computer hardware is virtually useless without computer software. Software is the

programs that are needed to accomplish the input, processing, output, storage, and control
activities of information systems.

Where software do came from and how

arethey being created?

A computer programmer (or several

computer programmers) write the instructions
using a programming languagethat tell the
software how to function and what to do. Once the
program has been completed, it is compiled into a
language that the computer can understand.

How can we use the Software?

Once the software is installed on the

computerhard drive, the program can be used
anytime by finding the program on the computer.
On a Windows computer, a program icon
is addedto the Start Menu or Start Screen,
depending on your version of Windows.

OPEN SOURCE
There are two types of Software:

1. System software: A computer program that helps run the computer hardware and computer
system itself. System software includes operating systems, device drivers, diagnostic tools
1
and more. System software is almost always pre-installed on your computer.

2. Application software: A program or group of programs designed for end users. It allows
users to accomplish one or more tasks. It includes word processing, web browsing and
almost any other task for which you might install software. (Some application software is pre-
installed on most computer systems.)

How to get software onto your computer?

Software can be purchased or acquired as
shareware (usually intended for sale after a trial
period), liteware (shareware with some capabilities
disabled), freeware (free software but with copyright
restrictions), public domain software (free with no
restrictions), and open source (software where the
source code is furnished and users agree not to limit
the distribution of improvements).

Software is often packaged on CD-ROMs and

diskettes. Today, much purchased software, shareware, and freeware is downloaded over
the internet. A new trend is software that is made available for use at another site known as
an application service provider. Commercial software is copyrighted and one must pay
before using it.

FREEWARE SHAREWARE

What is the difference between a software and a file?

A file is considered a “resource” or “asset” used by the software.

All about System Software

This type of software includes the OS short for Operating System and other Utility
software. OS is the most important program that makes the hardware functions. All
computers must have an operating system so other programs like application software would
run.

Operating System Types

Multiuser – Two or more users work with the computer at the same time

Multitasking – Two or more processes running at the same time.

Multithreading – Two or more parts of the same process running at the same time.
2
MICROSOFT
Is one of the largest and most influential computer
company founded in 1975 by Paul Allen and Bill Gates.
Microsoft has a big contribution in almost every area of
computer software, from OS, programming tools to end-
user applications. Some of the popular Operating system
made by Microsoft are the following: Windows 95,
Windows Vista, Windows 7/8/10, etc.

APPLE MACINTOSH
Apple Computer was invented by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs with Ron Wayne in April 1,
1976. They are designed and sold by the companies, and aren’t meant to be tampered with or
tweaked by users. Apple and Macintosh computers run on the proprietary macOS and OS X
system. There are also previous versions/updates: Lion (OS X 10.7), Mountain Lion (OS X
10.8), Mavericks (OS X 10.9), Yosemite (OS X 10.10), El Capitan (OS X 10.11)etc.

3
LINUX
Linux is free and open-source operating system developed by Linus Torvalds and was
first introduced in 1991. The Linux Kernel runs on numerous different platforms including
the
Intel and Alpha platform and is available under the GNU
General Public License. Linux is different from Windows and
Apple, in that it is not a proprietary software, but rather a
family of open source systems. In other words, anyone can
modify and distribute it. Linux may be the least known on this
list, but it is free and available in many different open source
versions. Linux is popular because of its ease to customize
and offers a variety of options to those who understand how
to
utilize it. If you know how to customize and work with operating systems, Linux is an ideal
choice. And if this kind of coding and back-end work is interesting to you, it may be a good
idea to purchase a Linux system and get started manipulating it.

Google's Android OS

The OS that Google uses to run its Android mobile

smartphones and tablets is based on Linux distribution and other
open source software. Android OS is the primary OS for Google
mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Android has gained
increasing popularity since its release as an alternative to Apple’s
iPhone for smartphone users, and is continuing to increase in
popularity with new updates and exciting features.

Apple iOS

Apple's iOS is another mobile operating system used

exclusively for iPhones and iPads, some of the most popular
mobile devices on the market. iOS integrations have regular
updates, new expansions to software, and continually are offering
new features to users even if they have older devices. iOS started
with version 1, and has gone up numerically with each update (1.1, 1.2, 2.0, etc.) Many
users appreciate the unique user interface with touch gestures, and the ease of use that iOS
offers. This operating system also allows other Apple devices to connect, giving users easy
connections to other devices or people.

Mobile vs. computer

So why are there different types of operating systems, those for mobile and those for
computers?

There are several reasons a single system doesn’t

work perfectly for both. Computer and mobile OSs are
different because they are developed for different uses.
Computer systems will have to store lots of complex
data, have a different user interface, and be prepared
for printing, removable disks, and more. They feature a
desktop and a control panel for users to manage all of their information. Computer operating
systems are also older, and therefore more familiar for the IT industry; they’ve been around
4
much longer than phones that utilize operating systems.

Mobile phones do not feature a desktop that's the same as a computer desktop. Their
user interface is much more about simple moves, things you can do with your fingers or
voice, and a simple interface. There are many resources to help users learn how to
operating mobile phone systems, as they're very different from computer systems. Touch-
screen user interfaces, smartphones, and mobile devices are becoming increasingly popular
and need operating systems.

SYSTEM SOFTWARE UTILITY

System utility software is a set of tools that

helps configure, analyze and optimize computer
resources to help users perform multiple tasks
efficiently.
The best Utility Software provides key
functionality such as data compression, data
recovery, disk defragmentation, computer
resources and files management, system
diagnosis, and more.
Most of the operating systems have input built-in utility tools, but additional software like
antivirus tools, disk tools and data backup tools further ensure improved functionality. Utility
software focuses on computer components such as hardware, software, operating system,
and storage parts.

Types of Utility Software

There are four types of utility software solutions for fixing your PC from all these problems.
They are:
1. System Utilities
The system utility software covers memory testers, network utilities, registry cleaners
and anti-virus.

2. File Management Utilities

Archivers, backup software, data compression utilities and file managers fall in the
category of file management utilities. Example: File explorer, Total Commander,
Microsoft OneDrive, Sync, google drive, Google Contacts

3. Storage Device Management Utilities

All the disk related software utilities fall into this type of utility. They can be disk
checkers, disk partition editors, disk formatters, disk space analyzers and so on.

4. Miscellaneous Utilities
All the remaining utility software can be included in this type, for example, data
generators, hex editors, HTML checkers and merge programs. Sometimes it can be
one of the best tools to track your email.

SYSTEM SOFTWARE DRIVERS

In computing, a device driver is a
computer program that operates or controls
a particular type of device that is attached to a computer.
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE

5
The graphical user interface is a form
of user interface that allows users to
interact with electronic devices through
graphical icons and audio indicator such
as primary notation, instead of text-based
user interfaces, typed command labels or
text navigation.
