Water Treatment Plant Design

(2022-2023 Spring)
Homework 3 (03 May – 08 May)

Questions

1. A two-stage cascade aerator is used for the aeration of groundwater with a

concentration of 1.3 g O2/m3. The O2 concentration of the aerated water is 6.5 g
O2/m3 and the temperature is 10°C. Since this oxygen concentration was not
considered sufficient, the construction of a third stage was planned. What will be
the dissolved oxygen content after the third stage? If the groundwater were
anaerobic, what would be the dissolved oxygen concentration after the third
stage?

Hint:

2. Groundwater contains 3.5 mg/L Fe(II) and 1 mg/L NH4+. After this groundwater
is aerated with sprayers, it is passed through a rapid sand filter and is aerated
again with a cascade aerator. Experiments have shown that the sprayers reduce
the O2 deficiency from 90% to 5%, while the cascade aerator increases the O2
content from zero to 50% of the saturation value. Assuming that Fe(II) and NH4+
are fully oxidized, find the O2 content of the treated water. Assume that Cs = 9
mg/L.

Hint:

(For sprayers)
