Sapporo Snow
Sapporo Snow or Sapporo Snow Festival is held in early
February in the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture, Sapporo, and is
one of the most popular winter festivals in Japan, gathering more
than two million visitors each year. transforms the city of
Sapporo into an unforgettable winter wonderland of snow, ice
sculptures, skating rinks, giant slides, zip lines, ski pavilions, ice
bars and night illuminations

The Sapporo Snow Festival usually brings together about 400


snow and ice sculptures. The vast majority are located in Odori
Park, a hundred in Susukino and a few in Tsu-dome. Since 1974,
the festival organizes the International Snow and Ice Sculpture
Competition that has the participation of several foreign
countries such as the United States,, South Korea and France.
The Sapporo Snow Festival (Sapporo Yuki-matsuri) is held
annually in the month of February, lasting one week (February
5-11). It stands out for its spectacular ice sculptures that can
reach dimensions such as 25 meters wide and 15 meters high. It
also has several musical presentations, gastronomic fairs and
other types of events. The experience is described by tourists as
something fantastic and festive.
Gastronomy
While enjoying this wonderful and magical festival you can
enjoy a wide variety of Sapporo dishes such as: Sea urchin, curry
soup, ishikari Hotpot, sushi, miso ramen, jingisucan, pacific
herring soup, squid scall, fried rice with corn, gyutama beef,
grilled wing gamabas etc ...

History of sapporo snow It started with just a few high school
students and an art teacher. In 1950, they rudimentarily without
practical knowledge or the right tools managed to elaborate 6
sculptures of between three to five meters.

Encouraging the people of Sapporo, in the post-war period, when


food was scarce and when previous winter celebrations had been
left behind by the war. In its first version, dog races, dances and a
theater contest were held, receiving more than 50,000 spectators.
Due to its success in its second edition it became an official
celebration
