Mixed methods

Quant = identifying patterns, numerical data

Qual = lived experience

Mixed method = focus on research that looks at real life context understandings,
multi-level perspectives, cultural influences – requires a mixed approach – two
studies blended together in the analysis at the end – more ethical considerations

Explanatory sequential design – quant followed by qual

Explain quant results using qual
Quant results guide selection of qual data sources and collection and qual
findings contribute to interpretation of quant results

Exploratory sequential
Qual followed by quant
Purpose – explore, develop, and test an instrument
Qual findings inform quant data collection and quant findings allow generalisation of
qual findings

Triangulation design
Qual and quant components are concomitant
Purpose – examine same phenomenon by interpretation qual and quant results
(bringing data analysis together at the interpretation stage)
Or by integrating qual and quant datasets
Or by transforming data e.g., quantifying qual data

Be mindful of timings
Get out plan – make sure study one is enough to carry itself – discuss this with your
supervisor
Two studies can have an impact on your page/word limitations
Justification of mixed methods should be included in the research question
