Term: Collaboration

Collaboration can be defined as a person’s ability to work with others to co-construct

knowledge, meaning and content in both virtual and physical environments.
Collaborating is like cooperation but with the added component of working towards a
shared understanding and direction. In my career/life planning, I am now looking for
jobs where collaboration is an important part. I learned this when I completed the
transferrable skills surveys and created my personal profile in the course. I score very
high on collaboration and this helped me look for work that involves this skill.

Here is a possible example answer for a student’s cover letter:

To whom it may concern

Please accept my application for the historical site tour guide position at your
organization. I believe that I possess the necessary experience and skills that are
required for this job. My educational background with high grades in History, my
familiarity with being in front of large groups of people, and my experience working
with the public make me an ideal candidate for the tour guide position.

As you can see from my resumé, my experience working as a clown at children’s

parties has made me comfortable speaking and interacting with the public, which is
a valuable trait when giving tours and explaining features of interest. Furthermore,
through getting an A in Drama class and playing a major role in my school’s musical
play I have become accustomed to speaking confidently in front of large groups.
Finally, my interest and success in History classes throughout high school
demonstrates my ability to learn, memorize, and recite large amounts of historic
information. I appreciate it that you have taken the time to review and consider my
application. I look forward to hearing from you and setting up a time for an interview.

Sincerely,

A. Student

A sample answer might look like this:

Collaboration

Collaboration can be defined as a person’s ability to work with others to co-construct

knowledge, meaning and content in both virtual and physical environments.
Collaborating is like cooperation but with the added component of working towards a
shared understanding and direction. When I am collaborating, I both listening and
contributing to the conversation. I am using my own skills to add to the group. For
example, at work last month, my employer asked three of us to plan a company lunch.
Each of the team members brought a unique skill set to the planning. I was artistic and
created posters. One of the group members was able to use their organizational skills to
create a spreadsheet that tracked activities and expenses for the company lunch. The
third team member used their previous experience as a caterer to organize and arrange
for the food. The different skills of each group member combined to create a very
successful company lunch, more successful than if only one of us planned it.
