Name of Course: ESSENTIALS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING

Prerequisite/co-requisite: ENL101 English Composition I or ENL102 English Composition II
Summary: Students will be introduced to the basic principles of speech communication and the
respective responsibilities of speakers and listeners in order to develop practical skills of effective
personal, academic, and public communication. The course will also focus on effective speech
making (the essentials of speech organization and outlining) and delivery of different types of
speeches.

Upon completing this course, the students will be able to:

CLO1: Apply basic principles of speech communication in preparing different speeches. (C3, PLO1)
CLO2: Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in a variety of settings. (A3, PLO4)

Teaching and Delivery Methods/ Teaching Methodology:


Lectures and Tutorial, delivered in a combination of blended & independent learning

E-Learning provided by INTI makes learning more accessible and convenient for the students. The blended
model utilized by INTI is the integration of E-learning via INTI’s Learning Management System and the
conventional lecturer-led classroom activities. INTI students are required to access to the online learning
materials (additional notes, reading materials, online assessments, discussion forums and etc.), so as to
acquire a complete learning process. This also promotes self-directed learning in encouraging INTI students
to be independent learners

7&8 Speaking in Small Groups: Leadership and responsibilities in small groups. 1
Presenting in a small group.
9 & 10 Speech Preparation: Organizing the body, the introduction & the conclusion 2
of a speech. Outlining the speech.
11 & 12 Varieties of Public Speaking: Speaking to inform, types of informative 2
speeches and guidelines for informative speaking. Preparation of informative
speech outline.
13 & 14 Varieties of Public Speaking: Speaking to persuade, types of persuasive 2
speeches and methods of persuasion. Preparation of persuasive speech
outline.
15 & 16 Presenting the Speech: Methods of delivery, body language, using visual 3
aids and using various language skills for maximum impact.

Final exam format:


Duration: 2 hours
The students will be required to:
Section A: Answer All 30 Multiple-Choice Questions. (30 marks)
Section B: Answer All 4 Short-Answer Questions. (40 marks)
Section C: Answer 1 out of 2 Essay Questions. (30 marks)

Grading Scale:
A+ (96% – 100%), A (90% – 95%), A- (86% – 89%), B+ (82% – 85%), B (78% – 81%), B- (74% –
77%), C+ (70% – 73%), C (65% – 69%), C- (60% – 64%), D+ (55% – 59%), D (50% – 54%), F
(Below 50%)

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Final Examination is compulsory. Missed Final Exam will result in F grade.
