At the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the ability to verbally present informative speeches (A3)

2. Demonstrate the ability to verbally present idea pitching and persuasive speeches (A3)

3. Display appropriate values and attitudes when presenting informative and persuasive
speeches (A5)

Course Description

This course is designed for students to develop the strategies and skills necessary for effective
oral presentations. Guidance is provided from the preparatory right up to the final stage of
delivery. The course focuses on oral communication theory and practice with emphasis on the
importance of verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Learning takes place through a
varietyof activities to enhance learners’ ability to use the correct language for a presentation,
to exploit a variety of materials and sources, and to use visual aids appropriately in oral
presentations. In tandem, students will be exposed to basic computer skills as speech activities
are to be recordedand uploaded using a variety of formats. Upon completion of the course,
students will develop skills to participate in speech communication activities confidently and
competently.

Syllabus Content

● Understanding basic principles of speech communication (the importance of speaking


effectively in public, speech communication process, the importance of ethics in
speaking and listening, effective listening)

● Understanding the theoretical aspects of informative and persuasive speeches

● Guidelines for informative speeches:


● Estimate the audience’s knowledge of the topic of the speech
● Relate the subject directly to the audience
● Explore different types of attention getter appropriate to speech topics
● Present facts and figures presented in charts and/or graphs
● Describe, analyze, conclude and make appropriate recommendation
● Use language and terminology that is appropriate and comprehensible for
research findings
● Personalize the speech

● Guidelines for persuasive speeches


● Estimate the audience’s knowledge of the topic of the speech
● Relate the subject directly to the audience
● Use language and terminology that is comprehensible

● Preparing and delivering the presentations


● Researching topics and selecting relevant information from reliable sources
(brainstorming, screening of topics, determining scope, relevance and depth of
topic)
● Determining presentation aims and structure (purpose, audience, time management)
● Drafting the speech outline
● Using accurate, appropriate, and comprehensive language
● Using verbal and non-verbal aspects of delivery
● Determining and designing visual aids (suitability, usefulness, interaction using
visual aids)
● Making appropriate conclusions and recommendations

Teaching Methodology

1. The course focuses on the preparation and delivery of informative and persuasive
speeches. Opportunities to practise oral skills will be provided through activities which
would enhance the students’ ability to:

● Gather and analyze information


● Organize ideas
● Prepare different parts of speeches
● Support points or arguments using relevant information from reliable sources
● Present ideas and information using appropriate visual aids
● Describe, analyze, conclude and make recommendation(s)
● Deliver a speech effectively
● Cite references

2. Grammatical accuracy and language fluency should also be emphasised.


Class activities may include:

● Enunciation practices
● Watching speeches/ oral presentations (audio/ video)
● Intervention sessions
● Brainstorming sessions/ group discussions
● Presentations by guest speakers
● Online-based learning
● Workshops

3. Lecturers may include other activities which are appropriate to the oral
communication requirements of the students at the different faculties.
