CONFERENCE DAY 2
Friday, October 7th, 2022

Keynote Session
Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs

3 Design Shifts - Streamlining, Storyboarding, and Authenticating the Curriculum:

What to cut? Keep? Create?
What shifts will help us design modern learning experiences that match the needs of our
students?
Dr. Jacobs will share a fresh approach that will focus on three design shifts:
1) Streamlining: How can we make cogent choices determining what to cut, keep, and create in
our curriculum planning? Schools cannot keep “adding” to learning experiences without
shedding. Our right-now students need more contemporary phenomena-based experiences. Dr.
Jacobs will offer a process and examples of how schools can enthusiastically take on this
challenge.
2) Storyboarding: The combination of storyboarding with streamlining modernizes and breathes
life into curriculum planning. Dr. Jacobs will share an exciting new shift to storyboarding. What
if the curriculum was deliberately written as narrative? Narrative is typically defined as “ a
08.00-09.00 spoken or written account of connected events''. The story of a course across a school year should
address the question: Do students understand the storyline of the course layout throughout the
WIB
year? Do they explicitly connect the concepts, standards, and proficiencies across a school year
between units? Heidi views each teacher as a curriculum composer and storyboarding and
students as partners in developing relevant modern learning. She will offer a fresh approach
that visually helps the learners make sense of the sequence and purpose of units across a school
year. What is more, there is the opportunity for students to craft their own narratives in their
personalized learning journey.
3) Authenticating: Authenticity needs to be actualized in design and Dr. Jacobs will offer 4
practical conditions for designing authentic assessment supported by wonderful examples from
around the world on what this shift looks like in demonstrations of learning K-12.

Designing Student Missions with Curiosity and Good Choices in Mind

Brain science shows that curiosity is a powerful driver of learning and memory. And the good
news is that curiosity is a natural trait—something all students are born with. The bad news,
though, is that the longer they stay in school, the less curiosity they demonstrate. During this
session for elementary school teachers, you’ll learn how to create student missions that use
curiosity and the four characteristics of good choices to hook and sustain students’ interest
throughout the Project Based Cycle and Making Good Choices Project. You’ll learn how to turn the
spark of an initial interest into a fire inside to get to the bottom of mysteries, solve complex
problems, and explore phenomena so that they can develop a better system of thinking that
consolidates new learning into mental models.

Designing a Mini Lesson in Coding - Workshop for K-5 Teachers

Within the past two years, my partner and I have collaborated with Science teachers in grade 2-5 and helped them to
equip students with basic skills in creating Scratch projects. As the learning target with coding infusion is set through
the guidelines given by HSI, and the expected projects described by Science teachers, we identified all the necessary
block codings which needed to be applied in order to complete the targeted projects.
So, with a structured and clear sequence of coding target sets, students can apply the taught block codes in their
project, while at the same time, continuously develop their Scratch project with the targeted coding and topic
coverage required.
This session is aimed at K - 5 to help teachers identify a structured and clear sequence of coding targets for a smooth

Inquiry allows students to take ownership of their learning as they become inquirers without being directed by
teachers. The inquiry mode plays an important role to provide opportunities for students to become self-regulated
leaders. Meta Level Reflection and Expert Thinking are crucial skills for students to navigate their own learning. This
session will demonstrate how Meta Level Reflection and Expert Thinking are utilized in Mathematics class. Students will
be able to independently generate questions in each stage of the project from conscious planning, thoughtful learning
up to reflecting for future improvement.

The Learner Outcome Elements Immersion Strategies for Middle Year Students
HighScope's goal is to facilitate the development of self-regulated leaders. Self-regulated leaders are driven by values
and purpose and are able to demonstrate all Learner Outcomes. Learner outcome elements are introduced at the
beginning of the year during HITS. Some activities are done to make students understand more about it. But for further
understanding, the consistent application of an integrated and comprehensive approach is needed to make sure they
achieve the learning objectives. Some strategies are shared through this session using the simulation of one of the
activities in science class and how to immerse learner outcome elements in the process.

Wayang Dalang/Warisan Tersayang Daur Ulang Project: Make the learning enjoyable and concrete, online or
offline!
Learning is fun when a friend is around. I miss my friend during the pandemic and isolation.” Ever heard students say
that? Sad, huh? So, how can we support them? When a pandemic is not so friendly for the learning process, the
learning still should be concrete using materials at home. In this session, we will learn how an eco-friendly idea
through the project of “Wayang Dalang (Warisan Tersayang Daur Ulang)” makes students engage in an enjoyable and
concrete learning process, either in the offline or online sphere.

Computational Thinking as a Fundamental Skill for Everyone

Digital and artificial intelligence technologies (AI) are changing the world. The physical and basic
cognitive skills are replaced by automation, AI, and robotics. Meanwhile, the demand for
technological, social, emotional, and higher cognitive skills are increasing. Thus, the next
generations must adapt to the requirements needed by new occupations. In a future world that is
more automated and digital, humans need to have a set of fundamental skills no matter what
their job is. Digital literacy is one of the important skills that a person needs to have. It includes
the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, produce, and
communicate information by means of various digital platforms. Another important skill is
computational thinking which is a skill to solve a complex problem by understanding and
developing possible solutions. The key techniques include decomposition of complex problems
into more manageable parts, pattern recognition to look for similarities among and within
problems, abstraction to focus on important information, and algorithms to develop step-by-step
solutions to the problem. Even though the techniques in computational thinking originated from
computer science, there are many computational thinking lessons that can be used in any subject
area that do not require coding. In this speech, I will present some examples of the use of digital
literacy and computational thinking skills that add value, solve problems in everyday life, and
some computational thinking lessons that can be used in various subjects.
