Definition of Terms 

Boys’ Love. Boy’s love is a literary genre or media depicting the romance between male

characters. Commonly referred to as “yaoi” by overseas fans, from books to fan fiction, manga,

anime, and video games. (Binimbol, 2020)

Homosexual. It is a sexual attraction to a person of one's own sex. In the past, people with this

sexual orientation were commonly called "homosexual", or one of a number of other derogatory

terms. Today, it is usually considered polite to refer to people with a homosexual orientation as

gay or lesbian. (Petrarca, 2022)

Gay Man. In this study, the term gay man is referring to the identity of being a man who is

attracted to other man “in a romantic, erotic, and/or emotional sense” (LGBTQA Resource

Center, 2012, p. 4). This term differs from bisexual, the identity of attraction to both sexes or

genders, and lesbian, which generally would apply to females attracted to other females. (Smith,

2014)

Stereotype. It is the nature perspective which can influence the opinion of surrounding world,

hence stereotypes, socially-imposed depersonalized constructs which affect actual individuals in

creating and activating social expectations. (Lewandowski, 2014)

Lens. Operationally defined as the point-of-view of the respondents or their perspectives.

Drama. Drama is the portrayal of fictional or non-fictional events through the performance of

written dialog (either prose or poetry). Dramas can be performed on stage, on film, or the radio.

(Longley, 2019) Reaske (1966) further explains that drama is a work of literature which depicts

life and human activity by means of presenting various actions.

Portrayal. In this study, this term refers to the representation of homosexuals in the Boys Love
drama.
