 GERUND or INFINITIVE


The gerund is used: A after some verbs and phrasal verbs.
I don’t mind waiting.
We like watching films.
She took up horse riding.
B after prepositions
I’m not very good at maths.
C as nouns, especially as the subject of a sentence
Smoking is bad for you
The infinitive is used: A after some verbs and phrasal verbs
I want to meet her.
We managed to get a better offer.
B after nouns
We have homework to do tonight.
C after adjectives
I am happy to see you.
 The verb WANT is always followed by to + infinitive

I want to find a job.


She didn’t want to go to the party

We use want + object + to infinitive to talk about what we want other people
to do.

Our parents want us to study.


I want you to stop making noise.

 PURPOSE (=finalidad in Spanish: “para ……”)


In English to + infinitive is used to express purpose or to explain why you do something

I want to find a job in the summer to earn some money.


I will study hard to pass all the exams.
Why did you leave the meeting? To make a phone call.
I’m writing to thank you for your help.
I phoned Harry to invite him to dinner.
Negative infinitive: not + to infinitive: I read a magazine in order not to be bored.
