“SHOULD THE MINIMUM DRIVING AGE BE LOWERED IN INDONESIA?”

Driving is the controlled operation and movement of vehicles, including cars, motorcycles,
trucks, buses and bicycles. Permits to drive on public roads are granted based on a series of
requirements that are met and drivers are required to follow the road and traffic laws set in the
locations they are driving through. Driving skills have also been defined for ages 17 and over to
ensure the physical, mental and safety skills needed to drive. This evolution of the skills
required for driving has been accompanied by the introduction of driving laws that relate not
only to the driver but also to the driving ability of a car.
Legally regarded as a driver and required to comply with road regulations and what is most
considered is the age of the driver who cannot be too young because they are not yet able to
control their emotions, this regulation occurs in our own country Indonesia which makes
regulations that drivers can have a SIM if they reach the age 17 years. In some countries, basic
practical and theoretical knowledge of traffic rules is assessed by driving tests and those who
pass are issued a driver's license. Physical skills A driver must have physical skills to be able to
control direction, acceleration and deceleration. For motorized vehicles, the breakdown of tasks
includes: Proper hand placement and seating position Starting the vehicle engine with a starting
system Setting the transmission into the correct gear Depressing the pedal with the foot to
accelerate, slow down and stop the vehicle and If the vehicle is equipped with a manual
transmission, to modulate the clutch Driving steer the vehicle with the steering wheel Apply
brake pressure to slow or stop the vehicle Operate other essential assist devices such as
indicators, headlights, parking brake and windshield wipers Control speed and skid Mental skills
Avoiding or successfully handling emergency driving situations may involve the following
skills: Observing the environment for road signs, driving conditions and hazards Awareness of
surroundings, especially in heavy traffic and cities Make good and quick decisions based on
factors such as road and traffic conditions.
A person's mental illness can also harm a driver's mental skills, as can an altered state of
consciousness. One study on cell phones and driving safety concluded that, after controlling for
driving difficulty and task time, drivers who talk on the phone show greater distraction than
drivers suffering from alcohol poisoning. In Indonesia, there are many accidents caused by
teenagers who are affected by alcohol, this is what makes the accident rate in Indonesia increase
due to the lack of awareness of parents who should limit their children's driving.
In conclusion, driving under the age of 17 is not recommended especially in Indonesia which has
a very high accident rate.
