Interesting Discoveries Made by an Animal Trainer

Do you know your pets well? Do you know what it means when th'ey make certain
sounds or behave in certain ways? Animal trainer. Thomas Chia, has had pets all his
life and is convinced that we can gain some insight into how animals think by studying
their way of playing. Dogs are of particular interest to him. Unlike most other animals,
these canines continue playing throughout their lives. regardless of age, and that
naturally makes them the best choice for his research.

Thomas reads everything he can about canines. Besides

observing his own dogs play, he takes them to various places
and films them interacting with other dogs. Back home, he
repeatedly watches the video recordings in slow motion so
that he can analyse their behaviour patterns.
Thomas· dogs.
As time went by, Thomas' research showed him that dogs.

Read the passage below and answer questions 71 to 80. (20 marks)

"ian, Please take good care of Lily tonight. Dad and I will be home right after the wedding
dinner," Mrs Wong instructed Ian before leaving the house that evening.

Once his parents had left, Ian thought it was a golden opportunity to indulge in the latest
online episode pf the detective series he had been following. No one would be nagging at him to
revise his work. Moreover, his little sister, Lily, was still taking her nap. He would only need to 5
get their dinner ready after Lily's nap. All he needed to do was to heat up the food Mrs Wong
had prepared beforehand. Soon, Ian positioned himself comfortably in front of the computer
. and started watching the highly anticipated show.

"Ian, I'm hungry. Is dinner ready?" Lily asked when she awoke from her nap. Being engrossed
in the show he was watching, Ian dismissed Lily's request impatiently and told her to eat some 10
bread first. Having the most exciting part of the show interrupted was the last thing he needed.
Moments later, a sudden holler from the kitchen caught Ian's attention! Then the sounds of a
pot crashing onto the floor resounded in the air. Could something have happened to Lily?
Arrested by sheer panic, Ian jumped out of his seat and dashed to the kitchen.
15
Upon reaching the kitchen, Ian saw a worrying scene. What a mess! A pot of piping hot
noodles had spilled onto Lily's thighs. There were soup and noodles all over the floor too. The
poor girl, who sat motionlessly on the floor, was wailing uncontrollably. She must be in
excruciating pain! Ian panicked as he saw Lily's predicament. However, he knew he had to act
fast. Taking deep breaths to clam his nerves. Ian rushed over to help Lily onto her feet, before 20
walking her to the toilet. Then, he placed her scalded thigh under cool running water, hopping to
ease the immense pain she was experiencing.

'
Fifteen minutes later, Lily's wails had subsided into occasional sobs. Even then, Ian wanted to
get lily to the doctor so that proper treatment could be given to her burn wounds. Thankfully, 25
there was a neighborhood clinic in the next block. Without hesitation, Ian piggybacked Lily.
Though it was difficult, Ian bit the bullet and headed to their destination. Along the way, Ian
panted heavily and perspired profusely as he was getting tired. Yet, he did not give up. That was
the least he could do to make it up to his sister.

Upon reaching the clinic, the nurses quickly assisted Ian and Lily. Everything happened in a
blur when the doctor attended to Lily. However, the doctor praised Ian for his quick thinking as 30
it had prevented Lily's wounds from worsening. Although Ian was heartened to receive the
praise, he was far from being comforted. The doctor's affirmation could not remove the guilt he
was feeling deep inside. His selfishness had caused Lily to be hurt. What sort of elder brother
was he?
35
After being assured by the doctor that Lily's burn wounds should recover in the next two
weeks, Ian apologized, "I'm so sorry, Lily. I don't know what I can do to make it up to you... "
Surprisingly, Lily did not hold it against her brother. With all that Ian had done for her when she
got hurt, lily already felt loved and cared for by him. Still, Ian had another hurdle to cross. Ian
knew his parents would be angry with him. But, having to explain the entire situation to them
was necessary. Importantly, Ian must have the courage to face the music and accept whatever 40
punishment that would come his way. Causing_ h.is fear of the possible consequences aside, Ian
made up his mind to speak with his parents·.thatnight. Hand in hand, the sibling made their way
home.
