5 REQUIREMENTS OF PIPE SUPPORTS

5.1 General
(1) Piping and accessories shall be adequately supported and provided with suitable anchorage to
prevent excessive loads on connected equipment and to prevent undue movements caused
either by expansion / contraction or by vibration.
(2) Supports shall be designed to meet all static, operating, occasional loads (earthquake, wind,
surge, etc.) and reaction on the piping system due to the opening of safety valves to which the
piping may be subject.
(3) Each support assembly including spring supports shall be designed to sustain the hydrostatic
test load.
(4) Support points shall be adequately located and spaced for optimum load distribution and weight
balance.
(5) Guides and direction restraints shall be so as to allow lines to expand and contract freely relative
to the anchor, and shall be designed to be structurally suitable to withstand loads involved.
(6) Supporting line from other lines should be minimized considering the thermal expansion.
(7) Where expansion joints are applied, anchor and guide shall be provided and designed in
accordance with the requirements of the manufacturer and standard of EJMA.

tracing line.

5.2 Allowable Stresses for Materials

Allowable stresses for materials commonly used in the design of pipe hangers and supports are
listed in Tables 2 and A1 of MSS SP-58.
Allowable stresses for materials not listed in Tables 2 and A1 of MSS SP-58 with known physical
properties shall be determined as the lower of the following values

 1/4 of minimum tensile strength at service temperature.

 5/8 of minimum yield strength at service temperature.

Allowable stresses for castings shall be multiplied by a quality factor of 0.8.

5.3 Design Temperatures for Support Parts

Design temperatures for support parts in direct contact with pipe shall be the temperature of the
contained fluid. Parts of hanger and supports not in direct contact with pipe and exterior to any
insulation may be designed for one third (1/3) fluid temperature or ambient temperature, whichever
is greater.

5.4 Selection of Proper Supports

(1) The method of pipe support depends on;
1) At points of support subject to vertical movements, spring supports of suitable design
may be used to prevent excessive load variation.
2) All springs shall be provided with devices preventing misalignment, eccentric loading and
excessive spring stress.

3) When piping stress is critical, use of constant load supports shall be considered.
4) At points of support subject to horizontal movements, displacements shall be considered
by use of sliding supports (with adequate length to take into account pipe displacements,
etc.) or by the swing of long hanger rods (in this case, maximum angular displacement
shall not exceed 4 degrees). Selected pipe hangers shall be of an adjustable type.
5) Pipes installed with axial bellows shall be guided from each side in order to maintain
correct alignment, and anchors for bellows shall be designed to withstand the pressure
thrusts.
6) Pipes installed with axial bellows shall be guided from each side in order to maintain
correct alignment, and anchors for bellows shall be designed to withstand the pressure
thrusts.
(2) Support selection philosophy
1) Welded shoes
A. Welded shoes shall be used on the following piping
i. CS (LTCS) piping
- For CS piping (~371℃ ), welded shoes(consists of CS plate) shall be
applied line due to temperature limitation of applying CS plate.
- For CS piping (372℃~ ), welded shoes (consists of LTCS plate) shall be
applied.
ii. Stop / Anchor points on CS(PWHT) / Alloy piping.
2) Clamped shoes
A. Clamped shoes shall be used on the following piping
i. Piping requiring PWHT (to prevent additional PWHT / except for stop and
anchor points)
ii. Galvanized piping (to prevent melting galvanized material)
iii. SS piping (using clamp shoes to prevent galvanic corrosion or for cost saving)
iv. Alloy piping (to prevent additional PWHT / except for stop and anchor points)
B. To prevent galvanic corrosion, CS clamp on SS pipe shall be separated from the
pipe by using a layer of P.T.F.E. pad.
C. To prevent damage on pipe, CS clamp on GRP pipe shall be separated from the pipe
by using a layer of rubber pad.
D. For CS clamp on SS pipe shall be applied until 260℃ line, due to temperature limit of
P.T.F.E. pad. Above 260℃ line, SS clamp shall be applied.
E. For Stop / Anchor points, shear lugs made of main pipe shall be attached to main
pipe to restraint axial movement of pipe. (only for SS piping)
F. For Alloy piping (~371℃ / only for Resting and Guide points), CS clamp shall be
used. For Alloy piping (372℃~ ), Alloy clamp shall be applied because of
temperature limitation of CS material.

3) Insulated pipes shall not rest directly on their insulation but pipe shoes shall be applied.
4) Non-insulated pipes should rest directly on the supporting steel (except for SS piping to
prevent galvanic corrosion). However, pipe shoes (clamped or welded) shall be
considered if:
- The line requires a slope.
5) Pipe saddles and reinforcing pads shall be made from the same type of material as the
pipe and shall have a vent hole.

(3) Special supports shall be designed for individual applications where a standard support cannot
be applied.

6 SUPPORT SPAN
Two criteria used to calculate pipe spans are deflections criteria and bending stresses criteria. The
deflections and bending stresses shall be calculated as the following formulae from the data in BS
3974 Part 1, Appendix B.
The calculated span can be increased 22% for continuously supported lines (pipe rack, sleeper, etc.)
and the span increase shall not be used for pulsating lines.
Calculated maximum spans for straight pipe are shown in attachment 1 and typical piping support
locations are shown in attachment 2.

6.1 Bending Stress Criteria

The maximum bending stresses between pipe supports shall be calculated from:

fmax. = w L
8Z
Where,
2
fmax. = maximum bending stress (N/mm )
3
Z = section modulus (mm )
w = total uniformly distributed load (N)
L = span (mm)

6.2 Deflection Criteria

The maximum allowable deflection at midpoint of span shall be 15mm and the maximum deflection
shall be calculated from:

 max. =

10.1 General Requirements

These drawings and the attached pipe support drawings cover the requirements of the installation of
pipe supports.

10.2 Installation
(1) Fabricated pipe supports shall be installed at the locations indicated on the piping arrangement
