CHAPTER 1
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 EXTINGUISHING AGENT.

1.1.1 The Extinguishing Agent. The extinguishing agent Halon 1211 (BCF) is a halogenated hydrocarbon chemically
identified as bromochlorodifluoromethane. Its chemical symbol is CBr2C1F2. Halon 1211 is a colorless, faintly sweet-
smelling, electrically nonconductive gas. At ambient conditions its approximate boiling point is 25 Degree Fahrenheit (°F)
(-3.4 Degree Celsius (°C)) and its freezing point is -256 °F (-160 °F). Halon 1211 gas is liquified by its own vapor pressure
when in a closed container.

1.1.2 Halon 1211, Clean. Halon 1211 is a clean, multi-purpose fire fighting agent, effective for Class A, B and C fires.
Class A fires are fires in ordinary combustible materials such as paper, cloth, wood, trash, rubber, and many plastics. Class B
fires are fires in flammable liquids, grease, oil, tar, oil base paint, lacquers, and flammable gases. Class C fires are fires in live
electrical equipment.

NOTE
Certain small extinguishers (including this five pound unit) charged with multi-purpose Halon 1211 are rated for
only Class B and C fires. These small units have insufficient effectiveness to earn the Underwriters Laboratories
minimum Class A rating even though they have value in extinguishing smaller Class A fires.

1.1.3 Halon 1211 Extinguishes. Halon 1211 extinguishes by chemically interrupting the fires chain reaction, the con-
tinuing combination of oxygen, fuel and heat. Discharged as an 85 percent liquid/15 percent vapor stream, Halon 1211 offers
long discharge range, which helps the operator to stay at a safe distance while fighting a fire. The liquid/ vapor discharge
allows Halon 1211 to flow around obstructions when extinguishing tough-to-reach fires.

1.1.4 Halon 1211, Low Level. Halon 1211 has a low level of toxicity. It has been approved for use in portable fire
extinguishers by Underwriters Laboratories in Standard No. 1093 and in local applications by National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) in Standard Number (No.) 12B. The Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular 20-42B also
recommends the use of Halon 1211 portables on commercial aircraft. The approves the use of Halon 1211 for aircraft use.

1.1.5 Physical characteristics.

Although Halon 1211 vapor has a low toxicity, its decomposition products can be hazardous. On decomposition,
Halon 1211 has a characteristic sharp, acrid odor, even in concentrations of only a few parts per million. The odor
provides a built-in warning system for the agent and at the same time creates a noxious irritating atmosphere for
those who are in the hazard area during and following a fire. Leave and/or ventilate the area after fighting the fire.
Failure to comply could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.

Physical characteristics of Halon 1211 are indicated in Table 1-1.

NOTE
The extinguisher comes with a label that reads “Warning: The concentrated agent when applied to fire can produce
toxic by-products. Avoid inhalation of these materials by evacuating and ventilating the area. Do not use in
confined spaces less than 624 cubic feet per extinguisher.” This extinguisher is used in applications other than
aircraft such as in buildings and boats. The statement applies to situations where there are no means of ventilation.

PREPARATION FOR USE AND RESHIPMENT
3.1 UNPACKING AND HANDLING.

3.1.1 New Unit. A new five pound, portable, liquified gas fire extinguisher will be received as a completely assembled,
fully charged and pressurized unit. Special unpacking procedures are not required except for the normal precautions used
when handling pressurized equipment. Take care not to drop the unit as damage may occur.

3.1.2 Used Unit. The fire extinguisher will be received as a completely assembled, empty or partially filled and pressur-
ized unit. If the unit is packaged, unpacking and handling procedures are the same as for a new unit.

3.2 PREPARATION FOR OPERATION.

3.2.1 Ready for Operation. New units are ready for operation on receipt, but should be inspected as follows. Visually
check the unit to ensure it is not physically damaged and that the nozzle is free of any obstructions. Prior to placing the
extinguisher in service, ensure that the pull pin is secured to the extinguisher. Refer to Chapter 5.

3.2.2 Inspect. Visually inspect the pressure gauge to see that it registers in the green zone, 125±50 Pound-force per
Square Inch, Gauge (PSIG). Temperature of extinguisher can affect pressure gauge readings. Nominal “properly charged”
marking on the gauge is correct for the 70 Degree Fahrenheit (°F) (21 Degree Celsuis (°C)) and it is best to check the
pressure at that temperature. Generally, as temperature goes up, the gauge reading goes up and conversly, low temperature
results in a lower gauge reading. The relative pressure gauge vs temperature readings for the Amerex five pound Halon
extinguisher are as follows:

Temperature °F -40 °F 70 °F 120 °F

Temperature °C -40 °C 21 °C 49 °C

for other temperatures.) 75 125 185

3.2.3 Fire Extinguisher. The fire extinguisher is designed to withstand environmental exposure; therefore, the unit should
be mounted in convenient, easily seen location.

3.3 SHIPMENT.

Apply a green NON-FLAMMABLE gas decal to shipping container when shipping a charge extinguisher.

3.4 STORAGE.

The fire extinguisher is built to withstand exposed environmental conditions. Store unit in convenient, clean, accessible
location.

OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS
4.1 OPERATION.

Position fire extinguisher vertically and about 8 feet (3 meters) from the fire. Remove pull-ring pin. Aim nozzle at the base
of the fire. Squeeze the lever and sweep the agent across the base of the fire using a side to side motion until fire is
extinguished.

4.2 POST FIRE OPERATION.

Halon 1211 evaporates rapidly. Therefore no cleanup is required unless moisture or a high temperature was present at the
area of application. However ventilation should always be provided to remove the vapors. If moisture or a high temperature
was present, use the following clean-up procedures:

a. After fire has been extinguished, purge area and surface with clean dry air (dust free low moisture content compressed
air).

ALKALINE WATER BASE CLEANING COMPOUND, MIL-PRF-87937 1

b. Wash contaminated surface with a ten percent solution of Sodium Bicarbonate, Specification O-S-576 or one part
MIL-PRF-87937, Type I to three parts water. Apple solution with a brush or rag. Allow solution to remain on surface
until all bubbling stops. Remove solution by wiping with a damp sponge or cloth, rinsing with water.

4.2.1 Recharge. Recharge the extinguisher immediately after use following the instructions in Chapter 5.

CHAPTER 5
INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
5.1 GENERAL.

The five pound, portable, liquified gas fire extinguisher requires ordinary monthly inspection to ensure reliable operation at
all times. Service maintenance should be performed yearly, after any use of the extinguisher, or when visual inspection
reveals the need for service. Every six years extinguishers shall be emptied and subjected to the applicable maintenance
procedures. When the applicable maintenance procedures are performed during periodic recharging or hydrostatic testing,
the six-year requirement shall begin from that date. In addition, the cylinder must be retested in accordance with National
Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard Number 10 every 12 years. Service maintenance, recharging, and hydrostatic
testing shall be performed by trained persons having available the appropriate servicing manual(s), the proper types of tools,
recharge materials, lubricants, and manufacturer’s recommended replacement parts. Extinguishers which need service main-
tenance, recharging, and/or hydrostatic testing shall be sent to the base Fire Department for necessary action.

5.2 INSPECTION.

INSPECTION is a “quick check” that an extinguisher is available and will operate. It is intended to give reasonable
assurance that the extinguisher is fully charged and operable. This is done by seeing that it is in its designated place, that it
has not been actuated or tampered with, and that there is no obvious physical damage or condition to prevent operation.
Inspect monthly or at more frequent intervals, if circumstances require. The gauge pressure must be in operable range
(125±50 Pound-force per Square Inch, Gauge (PSIG)). Make sure that the nozzle is unobstructed and that pull pin and lock
wire seal are in place. Ensure that pull pin is secured to the valve assembly protector. Ensure that operating instructions on
nameplate are legible. Examine for obvious physical damage, corrosion, or leakage. Check serviceability tag for next
inspection date.

5.3 SERVICE MAINTENANCE (AGENT REMOVAL IS NOT REQUIRED).

At least once a year (or more frequently if indicated by an inspection), MAINTENANCE should be performed. SERVICE
MAINTENANCE is a “thorough check” of the extinguisher. It is intended to give maximum assurance that an extinguisher
will operate effectively and safely. It includes a thorough examination and any necessary repair or replacement. It will
normally reveal the need for hydrostatic testing.

5.3.1 Service Maintenance. Service maintenance procedures are performed as follows:

When cleaning, avoid the use of solvents around the pressure gauge. They could seriously damage the plastic
gauge face. Failure to comply could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effec-
tiveness.

a. Clean extinguisher to remove dirt grease, or foreign material. Inspect the cylinder for corrosion, abrasion, dents, and
condition of welded seams. If damage is found, hydrostatically test, using the proof pressure method, in accordance
with the Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet C-6 and National Fire Protection Association Pamphlet 10, after
completing instructions in the COMPLETE MAINTENANCE section.

b. Check to make sure that the instruction nameplate is securely fastened and legible.

c. Visually inspect extinguisher for missing or substitute parts. Only factory replacement parts are approved for use on
Amerex fire extinguishers.

5-1
TO 13F4-4-131

Safety glasses or a face shield must be worn while charging Halon extinguishers. Failure to comply could result in
injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.

d. Weigh extinguisher. The total charged weight of a full extinguisher (including nozzle) shall be the same as the gross
weight that is marked on the label. Recharge extinguisher if weight does not agree. Follow recharge instructions.

e. Check date of manufacture on label, cylinder skirt or crown. The cylinder must be retested in accordance with
NFPA-10 every 12 years.

f. Visually inspect the pressure gauge. Depressurize the extinguisher and replace the gauge if bent or damaged. If gauge
needle indicates low pressure and the total weight of the extinguisher is correct, check for leaks, repair and repressur-
ize. If gauge needle indicates overcharged, depressurize the extinguisher and follow recharge instructions.

g. Extinguishers may have been placed in service without a means to secure the pull pin to the extinguisher. These pull
pins should be replaced with a pull pin and lanyard assembly, Part Number (PN) 06100, refer to Figure 7-2. This
assembly consists of a pull pin, 16-gauge copper wire inside a plastic sheath, and two copper ferrules. One end of the
wire is to be attached to the pull pin; the other end should be wrapped around the valve protector and secured by
crimping the ferrule. Inspect pull pin for freedom of movement and ensure that it is properly secured to the protector.
Replace pull pin assembly as necessary.

h. Inspect discharge lever for any dirt or corrosion which might impair freedom of movement. If lever or rivets are
damaged or distorted, replace as necessary.

Make sure that cylinder is completely empty before proceeding to disassemble the valve. Failure to comply may
result in an explosion of cylinder.

i. Inspect valve assembly for corrosion or damage to threaded connections. Replace valve assembly as necessary. Inspect
valve stem assembly. Original valve stems had a polished aluminum finish. Valve stems were changed in mid-1987 to
an improved blue anodized material. The improved valve stem can be identified by its blue color. Amerex PN is 06092
for the valve stem assembly (includes valve stem o-ring). Any time extinguishers are disassembled, any of the original
polished aluminum stems should be replaced with blue anodized stems. Lightly lubricate the valve stem o-ring with
Visilox V-711 (do not lubricate the valve stem seal). Reassemble the spring and downtube. Carefully install a NEW
collar o-ring which has been lightly lubricated with Visilox V-711. Follow recharge instructions.

j. Install a new tamper seal and record the service date on the extinguisher tag.

k. Reinstall the extinguisher in the aircraft. Make sure the bracket is in good condition (straps, rivets, and clamps). Some
users have experienced deficiencies with the original configuration bracket. A new bracket is available (PN 07495)
which has been tested and is approved for aircraft use.

5.4 COMPLETE MAINTENANCE (SIX YEAR TEARDOWN WHICH REQUIRES REMOVAL OF AGENT).

5.4.1 Every Six Years. Every six years, extinguisher shall be emptied and subjected to the applicable maintenance
procedures. When the applicable maintenance procedures are performed during periodic recharging or hydrostatic testing,
the six year requirement shall begin from that date.

5.4.2 Maintenance Procedures. Complete maintenance procedures are performed as follows:

5-2
TO 13F4-4-131

Before attempting to devalve the extinguisher (for maintenance or hydrotesting), be sure that it is completely
depressurized. Never have any part of your body over the extinguisher while removing the valve assembly. Failure
to comply could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.

Halon 1211 should not be mixed with even the slightest amount of moisture. Prolonged exposure of a devalved
cylinder to ambient air should be avoided to prevent moisture contamination. Failure to comply could result in
damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.

NOTE
Halon agent removed from an extinguisher at the time of maintenance or recharging shall be placed in a separate
recovery cylinder and the extinguisher cylinder examined internally for contamination. The Halon agent, retained
in the recovery cylinder, may be reused only if no evidence or internal contamination is observed in the extin-
guisher cylinder. Halon removed from extinguishers that exhibit evidence of internal contamination or corrosion
shall be processed in accordance with the extinguisher manufacturer’s instructions.

a. Complete items a, b, c, d, e, f, g and h in Paragraph 5.3.1 Service Maintenance Procedures.

b. Empty the extinguisher of all remaining pressure and Halon 1211.

NOTE
Aluminum valves should be removed by securing the cylinder in a suitable vise and applying a 13/16 inch open
end wrench to the front of the valve body, below the lever. Aluminum downtubes should be removed using a
13/16 inch box wrench. Every effort should be made to keep the cylinder opening covered to minimize interior
corrosion.

c. Remove valve assembly and disassemble removing collar o-ring, downtube, spring and valve stem assembly. Discard
valve stem assembly and collar o-ring.

d. Thoroughly clean all parts of the disassembled valve with a soft bristle brush or soft cloth. Blow the valve out with dry
nitrogen.

e. Install a NEW Amerex valve stem assembly after lightly lubricating the valve stem o-ring with Visilox V-711 (do not
lubricate the valve stem seal). Note that original valve stems had a polished aluminum finish. Valve stems were
changed in mid-1987 to an improved blue anodized material. The improved valve stem can be identified by its blue
color. Amerex PN is 06092 for the valve stem assembly (includes valve stem o-ring). Replace valve stem with new
blue anodized stems only. Reassemble the spring and downtube. Carefully install a NEW collar o-ring which has been
lightly lubricated with Visilox V-711. Set the valve assembly aside.

f. Inspect the cylinder interior following CGA Visual Inspection Standard, Pamphlet C-6.

NOTE
If any moisture is evident or a hydrostatic test has been performed, the cylinder should be immediately warm air
dried in the inverted position.

g. Clean the o-ring sealing groove in the cylinder neck. If any rust is evident, remove by using a fine emery cloth (200
grit). Clean the surface and lubricate the entire sealing area with a thin film of Visilox V-711. Install the valve
assembly. Hand tighten firmly.

h. Use a vacuum pump to purge out the residual air from the cylinder. If not available, pressurize the cylinder to 90
Pound-force per Square Inch (PSI) with dry nitrogen (minimum dew point of -70 Degree Fahrenheit (°F)). The
regulator gauge should be used to determine this pressure. Check for leaks while pressurized, then expel the pressure.

5-3
TO 13F4-4-131

i. Complete the applicable RECHARGE procedures.

5.5 RECHARGE INSTRUCTIONS.

Refer to Figure 5-1.

5.5.1 Recharging. Recharging is the replacement of the extinguishing agent. In simple terms, filling a Halon extinguisher
is transferring Halon from a large super-pressurized supply cylinder into a smaller non-pressurized cylinder and then super-
pressurizing the extinguisher with dry nitrogen. The natural vapor pressure of Halon 1211 at room temperature is about 22
PSI. It should be apparent that the supply cylinder must be super-pressurized with nitrogen to cause the Halon to transfer to
the receiving cylinder. The recommended super pressure of the supply cylinder is 80-150 PSI. A partially discharged Halon
1211 extinguisher can be discharged through the supply hose into the supply cylinder by first relieving the nitrogen pressure
from the supply cylinder.

5.5.2 Recharge Procedures. Complete recharge procedures are performed as follows:

5-4
TO 13F4-4-131

• Safety glasses or a face shield must be worn while charging Halon extinguishers. Failure to comply could result
in injury to, or death of personnel or long term health hazards.
• Before attempting to devalve the extinguisher, be sure that it is completely depressurized. Never have any part
of your body over the extinguisher while removing the valve assembly. Failure to comply could result in injury
to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.

• Use a protective shield between you and the pressure gauge while charging an extinguisher. Do not stand in
front of the gauge if a shield is not available. Failure to comply could result in injury to, or death of, personnel
or long term health hazards.

• An unregulated source of pressure, such as a nitrogen cylinder without a pressure regulator, should never be
used because the extinguisher could be overpressurized and possibly rupture. A regulated source of pressure,
set no higher than 25 PSI (172 kPa) above the operating (service) pressure, shall be used to pressurize the fire
extinguishers. The gauge used to set the regulated source of pressure shall be calibrated at least annually.
Failure to comply could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.
• Never leave an extinguisher connected to a regulator of a high·pressure source for an extended period of time.
A defective regulator could cause the cylinder to rupture due to excessive pressure. Failure to comply could
result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.

• Extinguisher shall only be charged with Halon 1211 in accordance with MIL-DTL-38741. Halon 1211 is a
corrosive chemical when mixed with even the slightest amount of moisture. After maintenance or hydrotesting,
ensure that cylinders are thoroughly dried before recharging. Failure to comply could result in damage to, or
destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.

• Only standard industrial-grade nitrogen with a dew point of 60 °F (-51.1 Degree Celsius (°C)) or lower CGA
nitrogen (specification GIO.I, grades D through P) shall be used to pressurize extinguisher. Compressed air
through moisture traps shall not be used for pressurizing. Failure to comply could result in damage to, or
destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.
• EXCEPTION: Compressed air may be used from special compressor systems capable of delivering air with a
dew point of -60 °F (-51.1 °C) or lower. The special compressor system shall be equipped with an automatic
monitoring and alarm system to assure that the dew point remains at or below -60 °F (-51.1 °C) at all times.
Failure to comply could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.

NOTE
Halon agent removed from an extinguisher at the time of maintenance or recharging shall be placed in a separate
recovery cylinder and the extinguisher cylinder examined internally for contamination. The Halon agent, retained
in the recovery cylinder, may be reused only if no evidence of internal contamination is observed in the extin-
guisher cylinder. Halon removed from extinguishers that exhibit evidence of internal contamination or corrosion
shall be processed in accordance with the extinguisher manufacturer’s instructions.

a. Complete applicable SERVICE MAINTENANCE in accordance with Paragraph 5.3.1.

b. If empty, depressurize, if partially full, invert the extinguisher and release the nitrogen pressure by squeezing the
discharge lever until the gauge reads approximately 22 PSI. Weigh the extinguisher to determine how much Halon
must be added for the extinguisher to weigh the amount printed on the label or name band. Total charged weight of a
full extinguisher (including nozzle) is 8 pounds, 2 ounces.

c. Place the extinguisher upright on an accurate scale (A), Figure 5-1.

d. Install proper recharge adapter and connect the Halon supply line. (E).

5-5
TO 13F4-4-131

e. Attach device such as “Pony Spring Clamp” to hold extinguisher valve in the open position. (C).

f. Open Halon supply valve and fill the extinguisher to the predetermined proper weight. Close supply line valve. (D).

g. Disconnect Halon supply and connect to regulated nitrogen supply.

h. Open the nitrogen pressurizing line valve and pressurize the extinguisher to the proper pressure indicated on the gauge.
THE NITROGEN REGULATOR SHOULD BE SET TO NO MORE THAN 25 PSI ABOVE THE REQUIRED
PRESSURE. Shake the extinguisher lightly. Shaking is required because a certain amount of nitrogen will be absorbed
by the Halon 1211 and this will speed up the process. After absorption has stopped, top off the extinguisher with
additional nitrogen as required. Close nitrogen pressurizing line valve.

i. Remove spring clamp (C), supply line and recharge adapter (B).

j. Check extinguisher for leaks using Halon leak detector. Note that some residual Halon vapor will remain in the valve
orifice as a result of the charging procedure. Before attempting to leak detect, vacuum or blow the vapor away from
the areas to be checked. Check extinguisher for leaks at the valve orifice, around the collar seal, cylinder welds and
gauge. If leak detector is not available, the alternate method is to apply leak detecting fluid or a solution of soapy water
to these areas. Use dry nitrogen to blow all liquid residue out of the valve and wipe the extinguisher to dry the exterior.
Do not leave any liquid inside the valve body.

k. Replace pull pin assembly, tamper seal, and nozzle. Ensure that pull pin is securely attached to the valve protector.
Record recharge date and attach recharge tag.

l. Weight extinguisher and confirm that the total weight agrees with the full weight and name band or label (8 pounds, 2
ounces).

5.6 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE.

Before attempting to correct any leakage, be sure extinguisher is depressurized. Failure to comply could result in
injury to, or death of personnel or long term health hazards.

NOTE
• Leak repairs will require depressurizing and removal of valve assembly. After depressurizing the extinguisher,
it will be necessary to clean all valve parts thoroughly. It was always better to locate the source of a leack
before the extinguisher is depressurized.

• The Halon 1211 in a leaking extinguisher through the supply line of your recharge equipment back into the
supply cylinder. The supply cylinder will first have to be relieved of its nitrogen pressure of allow the Halon to
transfer.

• Halon 1211 is a liquid under nitrogen pressure. Variations in temperature may affect gauge readings. The gauge
dial has been calibrated to reflect the tested extinguisher temperatures extremes (-65 °F to + 120 °F). When in
doubt about a gauge reading, place the extinguisher at room temperature (70 °F) for several hours, to obtain a
true reading.

relation of each part to its Next higher assembly (NHA) and/or group is shown either by indentation or by figure cross-
reference notes. The MPL is divided into columns as described below.

7.10.1 Figure and Index Number Column. This column provides the figure and index numbers used to key a part or
assembly listed in the MPL to its location in an illustration. The figure number precedes the first index number in each listing
and the first index number on each page of a multi-page listing. Index numbers are listed in sequence. When an assembly or
part has not been assigned an index number, the figure and index number of the preceding part in the MPL is used with the
letter F before the figure number, such as F7-6. The letter F means follows.

7.10.2 Part Number Column. Part numbers, including dash numbers, are assigned to each listed part in accordance with
current industry engineering practices. Appropriate numbers for types, models, specifications, specification control drawings,
and source control drawings follow the nomenclature in the description column. If a drawing number is different from the
part number (excluding dash differences), the drawing number follows the description. If a part is authorized for local
manufacture, and a specific drawing is required, that drawing number follows the description. If only a model or type
number identifies a component, that number is used in lieu of a part number.

7.10.2.1 Commercial Hardware. The letters COML in the part number column indicate commercial hardware procurable
from normal commercial sources.

7.10.2.2 Parts Not Illustrated. Parts which are indexed in the MPL, but not shown on the illustration, have a dash (-)
preceding the index number.

7.10.2.3 Markings. Decalcomanias, metalcals, vinyl film markings, etc., are considered parts. The identifying drawing
number for each marking appears in the part number column. An asterisk (*) means the marking is to be requisitioned
according to requirements of DODI 5330.03_AFI 33-395.

7.10.2.4 Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) and Contractor Furnished Equipment (CFE) Covered by
Separate Manuals. A number symbol (#) following a part number means that detail parts are listed in a separate manual.
Refer to the List of Related Publications.

7.10.3 CAGE Column. Refer to the Manufacturer’s List for CAGE codes and manufacturers information applicable to
this manual. When a CAGE code for the appropriate design or government agency is not active or government agency is not
published at https://cage.dla.mil/, the word “none” shall be inserted in the CAGE column directly opposite the part, model or
type number listed in the part number column.

7.10.4 Description Column. The description column contains indenture, nomenclature and cross-reference information.
The identifying noun is given first. Sizes, dimensions, materials, and tolerances are then indicated. If applicable, the appro-
priate numbers for types, models, specifications, specification control drawings and source control drawings follow the
nomenclature. When the drawing number for a part is different than the part number (excluding dash differences), the
drawing number follows the description. When a part is authorized for local manufacture, and a specific drawing is required,
the drawing number follows the description. References to other illustrations for information on detail parts or information
on NHAs are given. Attaching parts are identified by the abbreviation (AP) following the description.

TO 13F4-4-131

7.10.4.1 Indentation. Parts listed in the MPL are indented to indicate item relationship or NHA. Nomenclature of each
assembly is followed in the list (except for attaching parts) by nomenclature of its component indented one column to the
right. This indentation indicates relationship of component to assembly. To determine NHA of a part or assembly, note
column in which the first word of nomenclature appears. First item directly above, which appears one column to the left
(except for attaching parts), is NHA.

7.10.5 Units Per Assembly (UPA) Column. Quantities shown in this column represent units required for each detail part
in an assembly, each assembly in the NHA, and each attaching part to attach one unit or one assembly. The abbreviation AR
(as required) is used when quantity required must be determined when parts are installed. The abbreviation REF (reference)
indicates that item has been previously listed under its NHA. The SEE FIGURE notation in the item description indicates
figure and index numbers at which units per assembly can be determined.

7.10.6 UOC Column. These codes indicate the configuration of the end items to which listed assemblies and parts apply.
No code is shown in this column if a part applies to all configurations.

7.10.7 SMR Code Column. This column contains the five-digit Joint Military Services Uniform SMR codes. For com-
plete information about SMR codes, refer to TO 00-25-195.

7.11 NUMERICAL INDEX (NI).

If applicable, an NI is provided which contains an alphanumerical listing of all drawings and parts listed in the MPL
(including model and type numbers for components not assigned part numbers).

7.11.1 Part Number Column. Part numbers begin at the extreme left and continue from left to right, one position at a
time. For the first character of the part number, the letters A through N and P through Z take precedence over the numerals,
0 through 9 (alphabetic Os are considered numeric zeros). For the second and succeeding characters of a part number,
precedence is as follows: (1) diagonal, (2) period, (3) dash, (4) letters A through N and P through Z, and (5) numerals 0
through 9.

7.11.2 Figure and Index Number Column. This column contains the figure and index numbers for all parts listed. If an
assembly or part is not indexed, the figure and index number of the preceding part in the MPL is used with the letter F in
front of the figure number. The letter F means follows.

7.12 REFERENCE DESIGNATION.

If applicable, reference designators may be shown on the applicable illustrations or contained in a Reference Designator
Index (RDI). The RDI contains a listing of the reference designations that have been assigned to parts listed in the MPL. Not
all parts in the MPL will have an associated reference designation. Columns in the RDI are explained below.

7.12.1 Reference Designator Column. This column contains all applicable reference designators which are arranged in
alphanumeric sequence.

TO 13F4-4-131

7.12.2 Figure and Index Number Column. This column lists the figure and index numbers applicable to all reference
designations. An F before the figure number means an assembly or part has a reference designator, but not an index number,
and the figure/index number of the preceding part in the MPL has been used. The F means follows.
