ASSIGNMENT 2

Introduction
This is my second project, so I'll do everything I can to get Merit. In the first assignment, I had
introduced to you about networking. So, in this second assignment, I will be going to design a Local
Area Network including a blueprint of LAN, implement and diagnose networked systems.

P5. Provide a logical/physical design of the networked system with a

clear explanation and addressing table.

I. Explain the difference between logical and physical design.

1. Logical design:
The way data passes through a network is described by logical network architecture. A
logical design will often depict the following features of your logical network architecture:
• Subnets (such as: IP addresses, VLAN IDs, and subnet masks,)
• Network objects (routers and firewalls)
• Specific routing protocols
• Routing domains
• Voice gateways
• Traffic flow
• Network segment

Figure 1.Logical design

Because the information contained therein belongs to the L3 (Layer 3) of the OSI model, L2 devices
(such as switches) are not represented in an L3 or logical network diagram. While physical network
diagrams are necessary, logical network diagrams aid network management in the following ways:

• Troubleshooting: If service is down between two IP addresses, a logical network diagram

can quickly rule out a firewall issue.

• Firewalls: Using logical network diagrams, you can maintain your firewall rulebases up to
date.
• Eliminate redundancies: You can quickly understand what is and isn't redundant
using logical network diagrams.
• Physical network diagrams: are crucial for capacity planning, but logical diagrams
can also be valuable. You may use them to plan out network expansion or modification
and see what happens.
• Sharing network data: A logical network design may be used to communicate
network data while hiding physical network data.

2.Physical Design:
A physical network design shows the whole network architecture, including all devices and their
connections. Because they depict all of the physical aspects of the network, physical diagrams are likely
to contain ports, cables, racks, servers, specific models, and so on. In the OSI model of networking,
physical diagrams are referred to as 'L1.' If you're utilizing automated mapping software, a physical
network diagram might be a network's server diagram, network's cabling diagram, racks diagram, or a
mix of multiple types of interactive diagrams that enable you to observe what you need to see.

Because they depict the whole architecture of the physical network, physical network diagrams can
include a range of distinct components:
• Connections: are required in physical network designs. Connectors represent actual wiring that
connects physical devices in a network (aka connections). The endpoints of each connection
should be labeled with the port it connects to and the location it ends. Depending on the level of
complexity required, different colors, thicknesses, and types of lines can be used to portray
various types of connections, such as fiber, copper, and so on.
• Labels: Labels assist the viewer to comprehend what they're looking at when a physical diagram
uses generic icons. The hostname and IP address should be assigned to anything in the network
that is active and managed, such as switches, routers, and firewalls. Even if a device is in use and
maintained somewhere else, it should be identifiable in some way (perhaps with a different font
to differentiate it from the other network devices).

• Diagram Legend: The legends on a diagram describe what the different objects and
relationships mean to the viewer. The legend translates the many images, symbols, and colors
into everyday phrases. You would include this in your legend if you used two black lines to
represent fiber cabling, for example.

• Switch Stacks: Switch stacks, similar to chassis switches, are normally represented as a single
object/device.
3. Compare physical & logical design:

- The physical design layout defines the portions of the logical design network that exist in a certain network
architecture. It also refers to the organization of computers and other physical components. Among the
components are fiber, ISDN, and Ethernet. The logical design network takes a particular aspect of a
network's conceptual design and assigns it a logical role within that framework. IP network architecture,
such as Class A, B, or C address schemes, are among its components.

Figure 2.Compare physical & logical design

II. Discuss and explain the USER Requirement for the design.

1. Requirements for general:

From the model of system components in our generic system, the user component is at the highest layer.
The term user represents primarily the end users of the system, but it can be expanded to include everyone
involved in the system, such as network and system administrators and management. User requirements is
the set of requirements gathered or derived from user input and is what is needed by users to successfully
accomplish their tasks on the system. Typically, when gathering requirements, everyone involved with that
network is considered a potential user.

In general, the system should adapt to users and their environments, provide quick and reliable information
access and transfer, and offer quality service to the user. This indicates the following general requirements:
• Timeliness
• Interactivity
• Reliability
• Presentation quality
• Adaptability
• Security
• Affordability
• Functionality
• Supportability
• Future growth
User requirements are the least technical and are also the most subjective. As shown in Figure 4,
requirements become more technical as they move from users to the network. All of these requirements will
be developed in more detail as we proceed through the application, device, and network components.

The intent is to use them as a start toward developing more objective and technical requirements in the other
components. These example requirements are presented as a guide for you to use in developing requirements
for your network, and they may change depending on the user's environment.

2. Requirements of assignment scenario:

People: 200 students, 15 teachers, 12 marketing and administration staff, 5 higher managers
including the academic heads and the programmer managers, and 3 computer network
administrators.

Resources: 50 student lab computers, 35 staff computers, and 3 printers

Building: 3 floors, all computers and printers are on the ground floor apart from the IT labs – one lab
located on the first floor and another located on the second floor

Due to the guidance of tutor, I divide into 3 floors which ground floor will have 37 computers included 3
admin computers and 3 printers. The second floor will have 24 student lab computers and the third floors
will have the last 24 student lab computers as well.
III. Provide Logical design of your network as the example below based on user
requirement.

Figure 3.Logical design in my system

On the ground floor, I used swith2 to connect 36 staff lab computers, IT 1 tab and 3 printers. VLAN 0 of
ground floor includes 37 computers and 3 printers using the IP address: 192.168.2.0/24

On the first floor, Switch1 contained 23 computers for student and IT 2 tab. VLAN 1 of first floor
includes 24 student lab computers using IP address: 172.16.1.0/24

5 Ping IT 3 tab to PC 32 Admin Successful Same network

6 Check physical connection All is green Same network

1.Evaluate the design of the network:

My network design is not perfect yet. There are some limitations in networked systems:
• The server room is not clearly arranged

• The IP addresses of the system and PCs are confusing and easy to misunderstand.

However, my design also has some advantages:

• The networked system is clearly divided into three different floors: ground floor, first
floor, and second floor.

Design to meet the requirements of managers enough 35 staff PCs (including 3 administrative PCs).
50 student personal computers and 3 printers.
• The server room is separated from the computer room for simpler maintenance and
improvement.

• Network layout was effectively shown with clear explanations.

For this design network to work effectively, I have the following solution:
The system has been fully developed with equipment in accordance with the design table; nevertheless, the
wiring system must be estimated in order to be succinct while being effective. The system must be
upgraded with an additional backup line so that if the main line fails, the support line may be utilized to
avoid difficulties and the system must be shut down. To be able to set the scratch performance, the system
must employ the greatest hardware equipment and must accommodate for unforeseen events such as too
many individuals attempting to access the system at the same time.

P8 Document and analyze test results against expected results.

1. Write down the above implementation process into the logbook.

- Step 1: Room design The ground floor will have 40 machines including 3 admin machines and 3
printers. The second floor will have 24 computers in the student's lab and the third floor will also have
24 computers in the student's final lab.
- Step 2: Design Switch Floors 1 and 2, each floor will have 1 switch connected to staff and
management computers. The ground floor will have 2 switches connecting to the IT machine and the
teacher's machine, the senior management machine and the staff machine. . Therefore, the 2960-24TT
switch must be used. Each floor will create a machine, for fast transmission speed, avoiding congestion
that interferes with the inspection of students, the work of teachers and other individuals.
- Step 3: Design the router Let's use the router (1841) because it has 2 Fast Ethernet ports.
- Step 4: Design the printer As mentioned above. The three printers will be located in three different
rooms: administrative, teacher and staff rooms. These areas often require more use (printing student
work, rules, lesson plans,...).
- Step 5: Design the Wire Straight-through copper wire for Fast Ethernet will be used to link the router
and switch and for FastEthernet to link the switch to the computer.
- Step 6: Configure static router router. To enable two-way communication between devices, configure
DHCP for the router to allow automatic IP address allocation to devices.

Conclusion

This assignment aims to design and plan a network installation for a research institute.

In the assignment, the network is up and running. For me, understanding what to do and evaluating
assignments will help greatly in the future. By the design and test results in my work, I think it is
acceptable. Of course, I will have more improvements in the future.
