FROM OUR PASTOR

On this weekend, when the Gospel focuses on the special responsibility entrusted to Peter, Peters successor Pope Benedict XVI is away from Rome on one of his apostolic visits. At his age - now 84 - travel cannot be much fun for him, but he has always made the effort to be at World Youth Day the great Day, festival for young Catholics which takes place every three years. In fact his first apostolic visit, as the newly elected Pope, was to World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany, in 2005. The theme, which had been established by Pope John Paul II before his death was "We have come to worship Him" (from Matthew 2:2). The bodies of the three kings or three wise men are in Cologne cathedral, and Pope Benedict reminded his hearers that we share with the kings the privilege of worshipping Jesus every time we come to Mass. He told them: Do not be deterred from taking part in Sunday Mass, and help others to discover it too. This is because the Eucharist releases the joy that we need so much, and we must learn to grasp it ever more deeply, we must learn to love it. In 2008 he had to go much further, to Sydney, Australia, for World Youth Day where the theme was "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you" (from Acts 1:8). He told the crowds: Dear young people, let me now ask you a question... How are you using the gifts you have been given, the power which the Holy Spirit is even now prepared to release within you? What legacy will you leave to young people yet to come? What difference will you make? In the spirit of the times there was a text message sent every day from the Pope to the participants, each one stressing the power of the Spirit in us; the message of the first day was: Young friend, God and his people expect much from you because you have within you the Fathers supreme gift: the Spirit of Jesus BXVI. Now, three years on, he may be wishing that he was once again in the southern hemisphere with winter weather. WYD 2011 is in Madrid, Spain, where it could well be as hot as in Florida. This years theme is "Rooted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the Faith" (from Colossians 2:7), a theme which wishes to highlight how a firm knowledge of the faith gives us strength and confidence. In his invitation to WYD 2011 Pope Benedict wrote: Dear friends, I encourage you to strengthen your faith in God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. You are the future of society and of the Church! As the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians of Colossae, it is vital to have roots, a solid foundation! This is particularly true today. Many people have no stable points of reference on which to build their lives, and so they end up deeply insecureAs young people, you are entitled to receive from previous generations solid points of reference to help you to make choices and on which to build your lives: like a young plant which needs solid support until it can sink deep roots and become a sturdy tree capable of bearing fruit. As Pope Benedict XVI celebrates the final Mass of World Youth Day 2011 this Sunday morning let us pray that through our Catholic schools, religious education and parish life we provide solid foundations for our young people - for the future of society.

HOW DO I BECOME A CATHOLIC?

Are you interested in learning more

about the Catholic faith? Would you like to become a Catholic? Do you know someone who may be interested?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process of conversion and initiation in the Catholic Church as adults (anyone seven years of age or older) journey together in faith and share experiences while discerning Gods call. If interested in participating, please call the office. We will be happy to assist you on your journey.

OFFICE HOURS: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm MARRIAGE PREPARATION: Please contact the Church Office to schedule a meeting with Father Augustine. You need to allow six months for the preparation process and it would help us if you could obtain new baptism certificates before the meeting. We can also help with the convalidation (blessing) of a civil marriage and sometimes with the annulment of a previous marriage as long as the civil divorce is complete.

DO YOU HAVE A CHILD, SEVEN YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER, WHO HAS NOT YET BEEN BAPTIZED CATHOLIC?
Once a child reaches the age of reason (seven), the child is brought into the Church just as an adult isthrough the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Following this process of preparation which lasts about a year, the child is fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. In order to have a child baptized Catholic, at least one parent must be Catholic. If you are considering having your childage 7 or olderbecome Catholic, or if you have any questions, please contact Sister Marie at the parish office, 407.293.9556 ext. 121.

BAPTISM PREPARATION is offered to parents and

godparents and is required prior to scheduling a baptism. Please register for the class by calling Deacon Paul Volkerson at the Parish Office (407.293.9556 extension 110). Classes take place on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm.

Second Collection for the Horn of Africa

On August 12th Bishop John Noonan wrote to the parishes: More than 12 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia because of what many are calling the worst drought in decades. This severe lack of rainfall has resulted in failed crops, deaths of livestock and critical shortages in food and water. There are parents whose little children have died, and children who have been orphaned. They are suffering from hunger, thirst, disease, and drought. The Holy Father, on several occasions, has asked Catholics to respond generously to the desperate needs of our brothers and sisters in East Africa. I am asking you to take up a second collection to support emergency relief efforts in the Horn of Africa the weekend of August 27, 28. Our collection will support the relief efforts provided by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) on the ground in East Africa.

Any checks should be made payable to the parish but earmarked Horn of Africa relief.

Blessing of Students and Teachers

Lord our God, in your wisdom and love you surround us with the mysteries of the universe. In times long past you sent us your prophets to teach your laws and to bear witness to your undying love. You sent us your Son to teach us by word and example that true wisdom comes from you alone. Send your Spirit upon these students and their teachers and fill them with your wisdom and blessings. Grant that during this academic year they may devote themselves to their studies and share what they have learned from others. Grant this through Christ our Lord. -Book of Blessings
