Discussion 2

Knowing how your linear accelerator is calibrated is a critical part to performing proper
MU calculations. Describe how the physicists at your facility have calibrated their
accelerators. What are the reference conditions they have set up? For example, is it
calibrated SAD or SSD, what depth, what field size, what is the dose per MU?
This is the list of tests performed at my center:

These tests are usually split over several days. The TG-51 protocol above can be used to set up
either SAD or SSD calculations. TG-51 is only for Co-60 and higher photon energy beams, and
electrons from 4-50 MeV.
For OHCI the physicists use 1 MU = 1 cGy at central axis and at a depth of dmax, for a 10x10
field (x-rays) or 10x10 applicator (electrons) at 100 SSD. More importantly this is not 1 cGy at
isocenter, it’s 1 cGy at 100 cm plus whatever depth dmax is. If an MU calc were to be done by
hand for iso, a correction using the inverse square factor would need to be done.
