Cheat Sheet: Exalogic Elastic Cloud

ELEVATOR PITCH
Exalogic Elastic Cloud, featuring Exalogic software and hardware in a pre-integrated, highly optimized system, is the ideal foundation for private cloud initiatives,
data center consolidation projects and high-performance enterprise Java and middleware deployments. Exalogic Elastic Cloud enables IT organizations to achieve
high service levels, while dramatically reducing the time and expense associated with deploying applications.

Exalogic is optimized to work with Exadata, Oracle’s database machine. The combination of these two platforms enables customers to eliminate 60% of middle
tier and 75% of database tier operating costs while realizing dramatic improvements in performance, reliability and availability.

KEY BUSINESS REQUIREMENTS

 Increased Service Levels: In todays always on, always connected world, organizations run applications where unplanned downtime or lost
transactions are not an option. Business-critical applications demand architectures with no single points of failure and software that can guarantee
transaction integrity.
 Performance and Scalability: For many organizations, application performance and scalability translate directly into business value, for example in
the form of improved customer experience, better decision making, the ability to scale with their business needs on demand, or by gaining
competitive advantages.
 Speed Time to Value: Many of today’s application development, deployment, and management efforts require the integration of multiple
technologies across software, hardware, storage and network. By leveraging pre-integrated systems, organizations can greatly reduce their time to
value.
 Business Agility: Cloud Computing trends and technologies challenge traditional IT organizations to become more accountable, flexible and cost-
effective IT service providers that help business stakeholders to meet their needs.
 Control Cost: IT organizations are continually under pressure to find new sources of savings. Cloud computing and consolidation are now standard
tools of the trade for increasing server density and driving down capital expense. At the same time, standardization of infrastructure and software
development and management processes enable IT organizations to improve their productivity and drive down operational expense.

KEY FEATURES
 Scalable Architecture: Leverage partitioning, add racks to the Exalogic Elastic Cloud incrementally to meet demand
 Leading Java/Middleware Performance: Up to 12x increase in performance for better response times and higher transaction throughput
 Engineered System: Pre-built , pre-tested and integrated hardware, software system for lower cost, better performance and increased reliability
 Cloud-ready: Elastic compute capacity on-demand, and faster system provisioning for greater business agility at lower cost
 Open: Use of standards-based hardware and software components allows for leverage of existing investments in technology and skills
 Optimized for Exadata: Exalogic and Exadata are tightly integrated for better performance, scalability, security and manageability

VALUE
 Increased Service Levels: Manageability, complete system high-availability across hardware and software of up to 99.999%
 Performance and Scalability: Engineered optimizations across leading SW/HW components lead to performance improvements of up to 12x,
resulting in unparalleled transaction throughput and superior user experience
 Speed Time to Value: Eliminates manual configuration and integration work, reduces deployment times of complete systems and business
solutions from months to weeks, or even days
 Business Agility: React to changing business needs quickly, deploy systems faster and provision application infrastructure on-demand
 Control Costs: Consolidate hardware platforms and software workloads onto a single, unified platform – reduce cost by up to 60%

TARGET ACCOUNT PROFILE
Organizations:
(1) With investments in custom Java application development projects, in particular those using WebLogic Server for sizable transactional and
Web applications
(2) With heterogeneous hardware and OS platforms, and the need for simplification and standardization
(3) With investments in T-Series hardware, or other x86 systems, that are coming up for refresh cycles
(4) With (private) Cloud Computing initiatives, looking to turn their IT org into an internal service provider
(5) With Datacenter consolidation initiatives, seeking significant operational savings
(6) With significant Oracle software workloads and the need/desire to further streamline those deployments
(7) With investment in mainframes and other legacy platforms, that are inflexible and expensive to operate

CxO/LOB
Describe your satisfaction with the performance/reliability of your transactional Java applications.
Describe your satisfaction with IT’s ability to provision systems quickly enough to support your business needs.
Describe your satisfaction with application scalability and your ability to manage peak workloads.
Describe your perception of IT today and their ability to deliver a complete solution that meets your needs.
What is the overall impact to the business when SLA's are missed? Is there a financial impact?
IT
Describe the current service levels set by the business? Formal / Informal? How often are these service levels breeched?
Do you have Cloud initiatives? What does Cloud mean to you and what benefits do you expect from Cloud computing?
Describe your custom development efforts and architectures using Java and middleware technologies, and how you ensure to meet required
performance and reliability. What are the business requirements for these applications? What are the transaction volumes and dependencies
on the database infrastructure?
Describe your current hardware and OS standards, and what your process is to provision new systems and applications.
Can you elaborate on the cost and funding structure for operating your server and applications infrastructure. Describe any efforts underway
to refresh or consolidate platforms.
Describe current data volumes in your OLTP servers and growth plans for the future.

OBJECTION HANDLING
Exalogic’s smallest configuration comes with 96 CPU cores, we don’t have an application that needs that many. Oracle Exalogic is an ideal
consolidation platform for many kinds of workloads and applications, including optimized Java applications with WebLogic Server, packaged applications
such as E-Business Suite, databases etc.
I have another favorite server brand and want to buy best of breed. Oracle has spent significant engineering resources to assemble leading,
standards-based hardware and software components into a fully integrated and optimized system, which wil be able to run most of your application
workloads more efficiently and at lower cost.
Where do I find applications for this platform? Any application certified to run on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.x and Solaris 11 Express will run on
Exalogic. This includes all Oracle software products. Products running on top of WebLogic, e.g. Fusion Middleware, will benefit from add’l optimizations.

PAIN POINTS
CxO/Line of Business
 Unpredictable transactional performance as workloads grow / inability to deliver business results in time
 Delays in deployment as IT determines platform components, procures them, and integrates them when they arrive
 Increasing IT costs as number of servers and applications grows
CxO/IT Director
 Extensive tuning or complex infrastructure required to deliver performance in current generation server
 Inability to provide Cloud capabilities such as flexible and elastic scalability, management automation, provisioning
 Time and expense of custom configurations and integration as business changes and grows
 Growing complexity and rising cost associated with managing heteregenous hardware, software and networking infrastructure
 Lack of architectural expertise required to design consolidation platform with required reliability and performance
