PRACTICAL DATA SCIENCE ACTIVITY

Solve the following:

1. Ben is fond of reading books. He often goes to the library. The probability that he checks out:
a. a work of fiction is 0.40,
b. a work of non-fiction is 0.30;
c. both fiction and non-fiction is 0.20

What is the probability that he checks out both fiction as well as non-fiction?

ANSWER:
P (A and B) = P (0.40) (0.30)
= 0.12

2. While going through the class records, the teacher got the following information:
- 30 % of the students study math and science.
- 70 % of the students study science.

What is the probability of students studying math, given that the student is already
studying science?

ANSWER:
Math and Science = 30/100 or or 3/10
Science only = 70/100 or 7/10
P (Math/Science) = 3/10
___

7/10

= (3/10) (7/10) = 30/70

= 0.42
3. Ann attends EARIST. The probability that Ann enrolls in a math class is 0.2 and the
probability that she enrolls in a speech class is 0.65. The probability that she enrolls in a math
class GIVEN that she enrolls in speech class is 0.25.
a. What is the probability that Ann enrolls in math and speech?

ANSWER:
P (A and B) = P (0.2) (0.65)
= 0.13

b. What is the probability that Ann enrolls in math or speech classes?

ANSWER:
P (A or B) = 0.2 + 0.65 - 0.13
= 0.85 - 0.13
= 0.72

c. Are A and B independent?

ANSWER:
No, because 0.2 is not equal to 0.65. Therefore, they are not independent.

d. Are A and B mutually exclusive

ANSWER:
No, because 0.13 is not equal to 0. Therefore, they are not mutually exclusive.
