Praise be to the presence of Allah SWT who has given His grace and guidance so that I can
complete the task on time.

The purpose of writing this paper is to fulfill a lecturer's assignment in a “Teaching Language
Systems and Skills” course. In addition, this paper also aims to add insight for readers and also
for writers.

I thank Mrs.Yuni Budi Lestari, MA., Ph.D. as a lecturer in this course who has given this
assignment so that I can add knowledge and insight according to the field of study we are
studying.

I realize that the paper we are writing is still far from being perfect. Therefore, I will look
forward to constructive criticism and suggestions for the perfection of this paper.

1.1Introduction
Learning is a change in behavior carried out by interaction between individuals with
other individuals. Therefore, in the learning process learners must prepare to be actively involved
in learning. A learning method is a systematic way of forming concepts through steps to develop
an understanding of a learning process. Learning methods have a very important function in
learning English. This study will focus on the grammar teaching methods that teachers use in
video lessons on youtube. The study will also reveal the advantages and disadvantages of the
teaching methods used. This topic is interesting to discuss because it is relevant to the needs of
students, teachers, and technological developments. From the analysis of learning videos on
YouTube the learning method used to learn grammar is the GTM. GTM stands for (Grammar
Translation Method). Mart (2013: 104) revealed that the use of translation will contribute to the
effective use of the target language. Learn to be meaningful through translation, and better
understanding improves foreign language skills. Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is useful
because the learning process is clearer, so accuracy will be obtained by students.

1.2Methode
The data collection method used in the writing of this paper is a qualitative method. This
Data is usually collected through text, images, audio, to video, and where in stacking into a
paper.

2.1 Findings
From the data obtained from watching 2 YouTube videos about a teacher who is teaching
grammar in class, it can be seen that the teacher uses the grammar teaching method with the
Grammar Translation methods, or what is known as the GTM.

Identifications:

The techniques used by the teachers in the two videos I analyzed are Grammar Translation
Method or GTM techniques.

● Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is a common teaching method used to teach


grammar with main characteristics focused on translation and memorization of verb
forms. When teaching, teachers usually explain the material using local language.

Classification:

From the first and second videos it can be seen that the teacher uses the same teaching
technique. The teaching technique used in the first and second videos is the Grammar
Translation Method (GTM). The method is something that is taught to translate from one
language to another. Students learn grammar deductively, namely given grammar rules along
with examples and then asked to memorize them and then asked to apply these rules to other
examples. The method can increase the number of students ' vocabulary and can improve the
grammar they master.

Description:

● At the first stage, the teacher begins the lesson by greeting the students, after which
the teacher continues with a small warm-up before starting the lesson. Next, the
teacher introduces a sentence that is written on the board and where the sentence
will be repeated by the students when the teacher has said it.
● In the second stage, the teacher asks the students to translate each word of the
sentence. Ex in the first video : I watch cartoon on television

Ex in the second video: aku pergi ke sekolah

● then the last stage is, the students write sentences and the results of the translation
that has been taught by the teacher to their respective books

Explanation:

From the above results it can be said that the first and second videos use the same type of
teaching method, namely the GTM. This Is The Grammar Translation Method (GTM), The
method is something that is taught to translate from one language to another. Students learn
grammar deductively, namely given grammar rules along with examples and then asked to
memorize them and then asked to apply these rules to other examples. The method can increase
the number of students ' vocabulary and can improve the grammar they master.

2.2 Discussion:
From the results of the method analysis in the grammar teaching video, it can be seen that
there are advantages and disadvantages in the Grammar Translation Method (GTM).

The advantages of this method are:

● Develop students's skills and abilities in reading, writing and translating foreign
language literature.
● Facilitate students in learning a foreign language because it is allowed to use the
mother tongue (native language) in the language teaching process. Using this
method, young children connect unfamiliar words so that strong memory bonds can
form.

The disadvantages of this method are:


● This method focuses on reading and writing skills, ignoring listening and speaking
skills.
● This method cannot realize its purpose in accustoming students to write correctly.

● This method is only suitable for intelligent students.

● This method requires students to think in a foreign language mother tongue, then
the thought is translated into his brain, that is to the target language.
● This method occurs unconsciously, it hinders the rapid teaching of the language.

● This method makes / makes the teacher so lazy.

CHAPTER III

3.1 Conclusion
In making this paper, I have done an analysis of the grammar learning methods used by teachers
in video learning. From the analysis I did, it can be concluded that the use of different learning
methods can help students ' grammar learning.

The results of this study can add understanding and insight into how teachers apply Grammar
Translation methods (GTM) to develop English language skills in students.

The results of this study are expected to provide information for further research in the future,
especially related to Grammar Translation Methods (GTM) and other related matters.

This research serves as new knowledge about the Grammar Translation Method (GTM)
Learning English for learners.
