Concept Paper of 11 – STEM

The effect of having an OFW parent to the students academic performances

I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

International labor migration is one of the common social issues that Philippines
facing this day. Thousands of Filipinos chose to move to other countries just to get a
job. According to PSA (Philippines Statistics Authority) The number of Overseas
Filipino Workers (OFWs) or Filipino workers who worked abroad during the period
of April to September 2021 was estimated at 1.83 million. Overseas Contract
Workers (OCWs) or those with existing work contracts, comprised of 96.4 percent or
1.76 million of the total OFWs during the same period. With most of the OFW are
parents chose to move away from their home just to earn money for their children
education and future. This result to some other children not even recognizing their
own parents face but also affecting their behavior, moral, and academic
performances.
Based on the study of Irene Parajillo-Aquino (2019) The parents are the provider of
the basic needs of their children and considered as first educational institution for the
children for it is the first place where children learn the basic learning and the first
socialization of children where values, customs and culture is being introduced.
Children in general, usually look up to their parents in terms of how they should act.
The family serves as the first institution, in which children learn the very basic and
essential values. Parents are there to give their children the love that they need, teach
them what is the right and what is wrong while a child sees his/her parents as a role
model and the most important person in his/her life.
Long-distance parenting occurs when migrant women and their teenage children
communicate across distance to describe activities, share experiences, provide care,
share concerns, express feelings, and explain affections. Therefore, the success of
these mothers’ long-distance parenting rests on their ability to share their teenage
children’s activities, experiences, care, concerns, feelings, and affections. In addition,
long-distance parenting depends on the ability of parents to communicate with their
teenage children during regular or customary interactions, special occasions and
events, and times when achieving family goals is stressed, such as in urgent,
emergency, serious, delicate, or precarious situations. Furthermore, these mothers’
ability to interact with their children’s caretakers is essential for them to be able to
easily consult them on parenting-related issues.
Generally, the home has been identified as an overwhelming factor affecting students’
performance academically. It would appear, then, that broken homes may present a
very serious danger to the emotional, personality, and mental adjustment of the young
adolescent. This impinges on students’ academic achievement. Other variable to
consider in this study is the personality development of the child.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this study is to ascertain how having an OFW parent has affected the
academic performance of the chosen Norzagaray National High School students. The
following findings were drawn from the aforementioned study: There is a substantial
association between having OFW parents and its impact on the academic
performance of the chosen Norzagaray National High School students. The academic
performance of the student-respondents and parental involvement are also
significantly correlated. The study revealed a considerable disparity in the academic
performance of OFW children during their parents' migration. In order to improve
their academic performance, it is advised that students who participated in the survey
be consistently motivated, supported, and directed to spend time studying at home.
II. PRELIMINARY LITERATURE REVIEW
Several Studies have concluded that having an OFW parents can affect students
academic performances positively or negatively. According to Marie Joy B. Arguillas
and Lindy Williams (2010) Family structure, household resources, numbers of
siblings competing for those resources, and parents’ own educational attainment are
often important predictors of children’s education outcomes. Overseas migration of
parents from the Philippines has resulted in increasing numbers of long-term
separations of parents from each other and from their children. Western-based
analyses might predict negative education outcomes for children as a result of
parental absence. We find that separations caused by overseas migration often are
either neutral or can have positive effects on schooling outcomes, at least among
older children. Girls fare better in terms of educational attainment than do boys
overall. Boys are often more affected by background variables, including parents’
international migration.
The presence of parents can be a crucial factor whether a student produce a positive
or negative result. Based on the study of Ronald Ramos (2019) Most of the
respondents have low performance in their academic grades due to lack of

guidance from their OFW parent. There is significant relationship between parental

involvement and academic performance of the pupil-respondents during the

migration of the OFW parent. There is significant relationship between responses of

respondents regarding long distance parenting and profile variables.

III. RESEARCH STATEMENTS/OBJECTIVES

The main focus in this topic is on how can having an OFW parents affect the students
academic performances. Generally, this study will answer the following questions.

Question or objectives:
1. What will be the possible effect of having an OFW parents to their children?
2. What are the negative impact of this possible effect to the students, that facing this
kind of situation?
3. What are the common factors that affect the academic performances of a student
with an OFW parent?

IV. ABRIDGED METHODOLOGY
