1. List down 4 common oxidizing and reducing agents

Oxidizing Agents Reducing Agents
OXYGEN (𝑂2)
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE (𝐻2 𝑂2)
OZONE(𝑂2)
FLOURINE(𝐹2 )

2. What is an electrochemical cell? What is the purposes of a porous plate between the two electrode
compartments in an electrochemical cell?
- An electrochemical cell is a device that can generate electrical energy from the chemical
reaction
occurring in it, or use the electrical supplied to it facilitate chemical reaction in it. The porous plate
between two electrode compartments allows ions to pass through, thereby completing the electrical
circuit and keeping the solutions electrically neutral.

3. In the following reactions, which substance is oxidized? Which is the oxidizing agent?
a. 𝐻2 𝐶𝑂 + 𝐻2 𝑂2 −→ 𝐻2 𝐶𝑂2 + 𝐻2 𝑂
Substance is Oxidized: 𝐻2 𝐶𝑂2
Oxidizing Agent: 𝐻2 𝐶𝑂2

b. 5𝐶2 𝐻6 𝑂 + 4𝑀𝑛𝑂4− + 12𝐻 + −→ 5𝐶2 𝐻4 𝑂2 + 4𝑀𝑛2+ + 11𝐻2 𝑂

Substance is Oxidized: 5𝐶2 𝐻6 𝑂
Oxidizing Agent: 12𝐻 +
c. 2𝐻𝑁𝑂3 + 𝑆𝑂2 −→ 𝐻2 𝑆𝑂4 + 2𝑁𝑂2
Substance is Oxidized: 2𝐻𝑁𝑂3
Oxidizing Agent: 𝑆𝑂2

4. Complete the chemical equation shown below, show the changes of the charges:
a. 𝐶𝐻4 + 𝑂2 −→ 𝐶𝑂2 + 2H2O
C-4H+44 + O2 → C+4O2-4 + 2H+22O-2
(C - -4 → + 4 H - +4 → + 2 O – O → −𝟐)

b. 𝐶6 𝐻12 𝑂6 + 𝑂2 −→ 6CO2 + 6H2O

C06 H+1212O-126 + 002 → 6C+4O-42 + 6H+22O-2
(C - O → + 4 H - +12 O - +2 → -2)

c. 𝐶3 𝐻8 + 𝑂2 −→ 3C2 + 6H2O
C-83H+88 + O-42 → 3C02 + 6H+22O-2
(C - -8 → + 4 H - + 8 → + 2 O - O → -2)

5. Acetylene reacts with hydrogen to form ethane. Is acetylene oxidized or reduced? Explain your answer.

Acetylene is reduced. Because it gains Hydrogen and based on its charge, Hydrogen gains Electrons.
Also there's an addition of Hydrogen in it.____________________________________________

6. Separate the following redox reactions into half reactions and label each half as oxidation or reduction:
a. 2𝐴𝑔+ (𝑎𝑞) + 𝐶𝑢(𝑠) −→ 𝐶𝑢2+ (𝑎𝑞) + 2𝐴𝑔 (𝑠)
OHR: 𝐶𝑢(𝑠) → 𝐶𝑢2+ (𝑎𝑞)
RHR: 2𝐴𝑔+ (𝑎𝑞) → 2𝐴𝑔 (𝑠)
b. 2𝐴𝑙 (𝑠) + 6𝐻 + (𝑎𝑞)−→ 2𝐴𝑙 3+ (𝑎𝑞) + 3𝐻2 (𝑔)
OHR: 2𝐴𝑙 (𝑠) → 2𝐴𝑙 3+ (𝑎𝑞)
RHR: 6𝐻 + (𝑎𝑞) → 3𝐻2 (𝑔)

c. 𝐹𝑒 (𝑠) + 2𝐻 + (𝑎𝑞) −→ 𝐹𝑒 2+ (𝑎𝑞) + 𝐻2 (𝑔)

OHR: 𝐹𝑒 (𝑠) → 𝐹𝑒 2+
RHR: 2𝐻 + (𝑎𝑞) → 𝐻2 (𝑔)
