assessment - often motivates
students

supplemented with additional local
materials

supporting Maritime English as an
aspect of improved safety
 Establish international standards in
ME competency for different
categories of crew

WEAKNESSES:
 Maritime English is often mistaken
as only being the SMCP
 Learning English at sea is not
enough
 Classes too large
 Students only learn to pass tests
 Management fails to emphasise the
importance of Maritime English
THREATHS:
 SMCP may de-motivate students
and limit them to speak
 Too little time assigned to ME
teaching
 Class size too big for effective
language learning
 Students want to improve their
general command of English for
career purposes
 Lack of resources and authentic
materials
