ADDITIONAL RESOURCE 1:
ACTIVITY-ON-THE-ARROW DIAGRAMS WORKED EXAMPLE
STUDY YEAR 2022

This resource is to assist you in understanding the interpretation of Activity-on-the-

Arrow diagrams discussed in Chapter 12 of the Study Guide.

Example 1

An Activity-on-the-arrow diagram is shown below for a complex industrial building

project. Durations are in days:

Determine the early start (ES) of event “J”.

Solution

Step 1: Find all possible paths that lead to event J

Path 1: Start-A-E-H-J

Path 2: Start-B-E-H-J

Path 3: Start-C-F-I-H-J

Step 2: Determine the longest duration paths that lead to “J”

Path 1: 4+15+7+5 = 31 days

Path 2: 6+8+7+5 = 26 days

Path 3: 6+4+2+5+5 = 22 days

Step 3: Determine the path with the highest duration

Path 1 has the highest duration hence ES of event “J” is 31 days.

Exercise:
Now you determine the Critical Path for this project and send me your solutions!
