THE PASSIVE VOICE

1. Direct object from the active as the subject of the passive.

e.g. I bought that book yesterday -


That book was bought by me yesterday.

Rewrite the following sentences in their passive forms, leaving out


the agent if not necessary:
a) Liz is cooking dinner today.

b) Did they conquer the island in twenty-four hours?

c) I didn't lay the table last week.

d) Peter always eats carrots for breakfast.

e) Your friend saw my brother at the zoo.

f) They are installing central heating in the house.


2. Object of preposition from the active as the subject of the passive.

e.g. She looked after my children last year


My children were looked after by her last year.

Change the following sentences into passive. Don't use the agent
unless necessary:
a) My sister asked for an application form at the office.

b) Are they looking after that girl?

c) He knocked on the door very eagerly.

d) Sue never pays for the meal.

e) My father was talking to our neighbour.

f) Susan has longed for that gold watch.


3. Indirect object of give-class verbs from the active as the subject of
the passive. Direct object from the active remains the object.

e.g. He promised me a nice dinner -


I was promised a nice dinner by him.

Do the same with the following sentences:


a) I didn't give him the tickets.

b) Do they ask her the same question every year?

c) Jack is offering them an extra holiday.

d) Her mother showed her the letter.

4. Change the following sentences turning them into active:
a) My brother was given the first prize.

b) She had been seen by John before the doors were opened.

c) They´ll be met by me at the station.

d) A very interesting novel is being written by him.

e) That can't be done easily.

f) This bottle shouldn't have been drunk from by the children.

g) Your cousin must have been invited too.

h) He's been told off by the teacher.
