THE IMPACTS OF SCHOOL VIOLENCE ON STUDENTS

Introduction
School violence is a critical issue that has gained more focus in recent years due to the
detrimental effects it has on students and their academic performance. A young person can be
a victim, a perpetrator, or a witness of school violence. School violence may also involve or
impact adults. The occurrence of school violence has been increasing, with various forms
such as bullying, physical assaults, and school shootings, bullying, pushing, and shoving—
can cause more emotional harm than physical harm. In 2014, there were about 486,400
nonfatal violent victimizations at school among students 12 to 18 years of age. Zhang A and
colleagues ( 2015 ). In a 2015 nationally representative sample of youth in grades 9-12, 7.8%
reported being in a physical fight at school property in the 12 months before the survey, 5.6%
reported that they did not go to school on
one or more days because they felt unsafe at school or on their way to or from school, 4%
reported carrying a weapon (gun, knife, or club) on school property on one or more days in
the 30 days before the survey Kann L and colleagues (2015). Other forms of violence, such
as gang violence and assault (with or without weapons), can lead to serious injury or even
death.
This research aims to investigate the impacts of school violence on students, including its
effects on academic performance, mental health, and social behavior. The background of this
study highlights the prevalence of school violence and its effects on students.
The literature review focuses on the researchers' views on the topic and their findings on the
impacts of school violence. It also highlights other opinions and perspectives on school
violence's effects on students' academic, mental, and social development. The limitations of
this study include the vast number of studies conducted on school violence, with none of
them addressing this topic's specific issues.
The reason for choosing this topic is to increase awareness of school violence and its effects
on students, enhance knowledge on the issue, and help develop strategies to address the
problem. The research question is, "What are the impacts of school violence on students'
academic performance, mental health, and social behavior?" By answering this question, we
aim to provide insights into the issue and identify potential solutions to mitigate its negative
impacts.
