Ashley’s Fashion Blog Monday 16th July

Hi guys!
This week, I made a few things: a dress, a handbag, a necklace
and a blouse!
The dress has got long (1) silk – they cover my arms
and look really pretty. My mum helped to measure me so I definitely
have the correct (2) collar – it isn’t too big! It’s made
of (3) chain , so it’s nice and cool for summer.
Next, the handbag! This is very exciting because it’s the first time
I’ve ever made one! I used an old (4) sleeves jacket
to make it. I tied my favourite (5) buttons scarf to the bag to give it some
colour – I love the material because it’s so soft.
The necklace was very easy to make. I used a silver (6) cotton from an old
necklace. It’s so cool!
The blouse is very nice too. It’s got a (7) leather which fits around my neck.
It’s also got black (8) size on the front.
What about you? What are you making at the moment?

phones for chatting to friends on social media and sending text messages.
Some children send more than 3,000 texts a day! At my school, if you’re

Amazing food festivals around the world

France
Every year, the people in the town of Bessières in France make a giant
omelette. More than 15,000 eggs were used to make the omelette last year
and it was made by approximately 50 people. The omelette was made from
eggs, mushrooms, oil and onions, and it was fried in a giant saucepan. Last
year, it was eaten by approximately 10,000 visitors!
England
In Olney in England, there has been a pancake race every year since 1445!
Only women can take part in the race. There is also a race for children, but this
competition wasn’t started until 1950. The competitors hold frying pans with
pancakes and run as fast as they can. Last year, the race was run in the snow!
Italy
At a food festival, would you rather eat your food or throw it? In Ivrea in Italy, a
festival called the Battle of the Oranges is held every February. The people in
the town make nine teams. Then they dress up in special costumes and throw
oranges at the other teams! Last year, more than 500,000 oranges were used

Unusual homes around the world

Plastic bottle homes, El Salvador
I imagine you’ve never seen a home made from plastic bottles before, have you? Plastic bottle
homes help people who haven’t got a home. They are usually small houses, with only a few
rooms: a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen with a sink, and a bathroom. Many of the homes
have got electricity and a few have even got air conditioning, dishwashers and heating! Just
think: next time you recycle a few plastic bottles, you might be helping to make a new home!
The crocodile house, Ivory Coast
You couldn’t live in a crocodile, could you? Well, yes – you can, actually! Thierry Atta, an artist
from Ivory Coast, lives in a crocodile home. The house is shaped like a crocodile and it’s built
from recycled materials. The home has got only one room with a sink and a bed. It hasn’t got
electricity, so instead of bulbs, Thierry Atta uses a lot of candles at night.
The hobbit house, Wales
Fifteen years ago, Simon Dale built his home in the Welsh countryside. It is called the hobbit
house because it looks like the hobbit homes from the film The Lord of the Rings. Simon recycled
old materials that he found in rubbish tips to build the house. The home has got three bedrooms,
a lounge and a kitchen. The family uses energy from the sun to make electricity, and they use
wood to make a fire for their heating in the winter. They also get water from a nearby river.

A trip to Edinburgh by Kelly Taylor

Last month, I went on a trip to Edinburgh in Scotland. Let me tell you about my experience.
On the first day, we went on a sightseeing bus tour. Sightseeing tours are great because
you can see lots of places quickly. After the tour, we visited the Museum of Scotland and the
Museum of Edinburgh. They’ve got amazing collections about Scottish history and culture.
In the museums, we saw photos of what Edinburgh used to look like. There didn’t use to be so
many tourists. But a lot of things are the same – for example, the castle and many sculptures.
On the second day, we visited my favourite museum – the Museum of Childhood. It’s got a
collection of children’s toys from the past. You can see how children used to have fun in the
past. They didn’t use to have mobile phones or laptops, so they used to find other ways to
have fun, like playing with puppets.
On the third day, we went to the Writers’ Museum. It’s all about three of Scotland’s most
famous writers: Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. I liked reading
their notebooks. They showed how they used to find ideas for their books. My favourite writer,
JK Rowling, lives in Edinburgh. She used to write her books in The Elephant House café. It’s
near a car park in the Old Town.
On the last day, we went to Jenners. It’s the oldest department store in Edinburgh. It didn’t
use to have electricity, so they used to use candles instead of bulbs! If you stand on the
pavement opposite Jenners, you can see how big the building is.
Our trip to Edinburgh was fantastic. It’s a beautiful city with lots of things for tourists to see
and do. If you want to go on a city break, go to Edinburgh!
