HIGHLIGHT REEL #1 – 2021

Below you will find a sampling of course setup aspects found in some of your
colleagues’ courses. They are being highlighted here because they are
creative, beneficial, effective, and student-friendly among other things.
They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Whether these
examples serve as something for you to replicate or as a source of inspiration
for your own ideas, it is important that sharing and collaboration continue to
be a pillar in the Colombo teacher community.
Great ideas and nice work to the teachers whose course setup aspects have
been highlighted here. Looking forward to seeing what other highlights this
year brings!

As the hybrid model courses are just getting started, it is important to help
students navigate the logistics of sessions for these courses. Here Luis Carlos Garcia
helps his students with just that by adding pertinent information to the calendar
for the students to keep in mind.
We cannot assume that there aren’t new students to the Colombo in higher level
courses and as we start a new academic year, it is nice to have a guiding hand to
help us get back into the swing of things. Here Luis Fernando Cuartas is not only
sending that reminder about the daily class sessions, but through these messages
he is also showing care for his students and generating enthusiasm for the class
that day. While this may be just a small detail, it is more impactful than one would
think.
Keeping a well-organized course on Schoology is essential to helping students
access materials, finding what they need when they need it. Yudi Chica’s course
reflects this with well-organized folders that are labelled in a manner which help to
identify what can be found in each one. Not all students find it easy to navigate
their course on Schoology, but having your course organized in a logical manner
that serves the students is something that supports and benefits everyone.
Here is another example of a well-organized course in Schoology. While the layout
is a little different from the example above, Vicky López’s folders are ordered in a
logical manner and labelled in a clear and precise manner.
The Weekly Roundup became the unsung hero of last year’s foray into online
courses. Both students and teachers benefitted from them. That’s why it is
important that they remain a focal point and guide for our online courses. Here
Julio Isaza gives us a great example of a well-informed and well-organized Weekly
Roundup.
Next, we have a n example of a course overview that provides students information about
the topics of the course and the evaluation process in regards to some of the main
evaluative components; the final project, final exam, and speaking tasks. Carolina
Moncayo ensures that the students know what to expect in their course this cycle with
her visually appealing quick reference post.
Here you can see that Julio Isaza and Rodolfo Arango made sure to highlight the
importance of reading over the Student Matrix for their respective courses for students to
get a better understanding of what the course is about. It is a different way to approach
the course overview.
Finally, for new students and returning students alike, it is important to make sure
they understand the logistics of the final exam; how to access it and tips to ensure
a successful online exam experience. Here is a simple post from Luis Carlos García’s
course that encourages students to look over the infographic and watch the video
about the final exam procedures while providing them with a space to ask
questions if needed.
