Configuring Siemens Soft starter
3RW40
Introduction:
This manual shows how do you can configure the SIRIUS Soft Starter 3RW40. And, Some pictures
of implementation from the real field.
Picture of Module:
There are two Starter available under this group. Depends on the power rating the size would be
varied. No other Constraints here.
An Adjustable(Rotating) Potentiometer is used to Parameterize the motor details. Here, there are 6
potentiometers available.

Before you start to Configure the device two things you need to care about
1. Picking up “Name plate” details of right motor.
2. Desiring which “kind of load” going to driven by the motor
3. All the Input and output and Control supply should be connected to the starter.
Commissioning Procedure:
1. Check the voltages and wiring
2. Set the start and stop parameters
3. Define the RESET mode if a failure occurs.
4. Start up the motor and if necessary optimize the parameters
The table below will give you the clear details in parameter assignment:

The Symbols below will give you details of Potentiometer Parameter Identification with Description:
U Potentiometer:
The starting voltage value is set with the U potentiometer. This value determines the starting torque of the
motor. A lower starting voltage results in a lower starting torque (softer start) and a lower starting current.
t potentiometer:
You define the length of the required ramp time with the t potentiometer. The ramp time determines the time
taken to increase the motor voltage from the parameterized starting voltage to the mains voltage.
Iₑ Potentiometer:
The rated operational current of the motor must be set with the Iₑ potentiometer according to the
mains voltage and the motor connection (wye-delta).
Note:
This Parameter taken from the motor Name plate details. And, it should be dependable on “Delta”
Connection rating. Because, the Star Connection current mean that motor starting current and the Delta
connection is motor Rated Current.

XIₑ Potentiometer:
The current limiting value is set with the xIₑ potentiometer to the maximum required starting
current as a factor of the set rated motor current (Iₑ).
t Potentiometer:
You can set a ramp-down time with the t potentiometer. This determines how long power should still be
supplied to the motor after the ON command is removed.
Class Potentiometer:
You can set the required trip class (10, 15, or 20) with the CLASS potentiometer. A trip is generated by the
soft starter when the standardized characteristic is reached, depending on the trip class (CLASS setting).
If the potentiometer is set to OFF, the “electronic motor overload” function is deactivated.

TEST/RESET Button:
You initiate a motor overload trip by pressing the RESET / TEST button for longer than five seconds. The
SIRIUS 3RW40 soft starter is tripped by the fault signal at the OVERLOAD LED, the FAILURE / OVERLOAD
contact 95-98 closes, and the motor that is connected and running is switched off.
By pressing the RESET MODE button, you define the reset procedure in case of a fault. This is indicated by
the RESET MODE LED
