Liturgy and Devotional Music (Lowlands of Luzon)
• Religious music of the lowlands of Luzon reveals the impact of Spanish colonization to
the Philippines.

Pasyon- a Philippine narrative of Pabasa - is recited during Holy Week.

with a dramatic theme.
Liturgical
Salubong- religious ritual that re-
enacts the meeting of the risen
Christ with His mother on the
dawn of Easter Sunday.
Santa Cruzan - a religious
historical event that dramatizes of
finding the Holy Cross by the
Queen Helena and her son,
Constantine the Great.
The whole text is chanted. It is in triple
meter and in a major scale.
Regina Coeli Laetare – means Queen
of Heaven, usually performed in
polyphonic texture and and in 3 time
signature. 4
Dios Te Salve – sung during the
procession where the Sagalas and
escorts paraded on the street of the
community. The song is in major scale
and 4 a time signature.

Devotional
Flores de Mayo -means Flowers
of May, a catholic festival held in
the month of May. Performed as
the devotion to the Blessed Virgin
Mary or Alay.
Alay – an offering song held in the
church or chapel wherein children
offer flowers to the image of the Virgin
Mary. A quadruple meter song and in a
major scale.
