ESP SPEAKING SUMMARY

Areas of Inquiry : An Overview

a. English for academic purposes speaking


Research here has shown that office hours follow 5 phase structure :
- Pre-facing sequence
- Opening
- Outlining
- Negotiating
- Closing

The goal of an office hour visit is the negotiation of academic business. The need to develop
a convincing is also known as Three Minute Thesis (3MT). In looking at the 3MT, it would be
interesting to know how these talks compare to the related issue that continues to be
explored in other speaking contexts.

b. ESP speaking beyond academia


In construction, the grammatical accuracy is less important than the ability to understand forms
of communication. Less than ideal circumstances may also affect communication in some
business. This not mean that interpersonal aspects are unimportant. Finally research has shown
that it is important to ESP speaking course design to consider that some speakers must straddle
two ESP contexts (academic and professional).

c. Changing perspective within ESP speaking


AE research suggest that being a native speaker of English is not necessarily be equated with
competence. Apart from knowledge of grammar, one important factor contributing may be
familiarity genre or communicative goals of a speech event.

d. The conference forum


As is known, conference are a forum for many speech events. Conference presentation are
important to scholars to fully participate in the ongoing activity. Common CPs include panel
presentation, posters, and papers. CP research also suggest that mode of expression is
important to compare speaking and writing differences.

e. Conclusion and future directions


We can conclude that in communicate, we have differ in target language uses and aims. While
the instruction has typically emphasized language accuracy relative to native speaker for
effective communication. In some ESP contents, cross cultural awareness is also important in the
curriculum so it can given the wealth of information on how English is used and needed,
together with their evolution to evaluate effectiveness.
