longest living vertebrate on Earth

Did you know that the longest living vertebrate on Earth is the Greenland shark, also
known as the "sleeper shark"? These elusive creatures can live for over 400 years,
making them older than the United States! They reside in the icy waters of the Arctic
and North Atlantic, and have a slow metabolism which contributes to their long
lifespan. Scientists can determine the age of a Greenland shark by analyzing the
carbon and nitrogen levels in their eye tissue. These sharks are also known for their
unique appearance, with a dark gray skin and small eyes. Check out this photo of a
Greenland shark to see for yourself!
