WISH
B2 LEVEL
Why do we use "wish"?
WE USE THE VERB "WISH" TO TALK
ABOUT THINGS WHICH WE WANT BUT
WHICH ARE NOT POSSIBLE.
1 A Wish in the Future
If the wish refers to something in the future, we use the
future in the past tense in the subordinate clause.
Future in the past: would+present simple form of the verb

E.g. I wish my brother would come here tomorrow.

2 A Wish in the Presnt
If the wish refers to something in the present, we use the
past simple tense in the subordinate clause.
Past simple: regular verbs+ed, irregular verbs-II column
E.g. I wish my brother were here now.
was
3 A Wish in the the Past
If the wish refers to something in the past, we use the
past perfect simple tense in the subordinate clause.
Past perfect simple: had+participle II (regular verbs+ed,
irregular verbs-II column)
E.g. I wish my brother had come here yesterday.
4 Wish in the the Past
If the verb "wish" in the main clause is in the past
tense, then in the subordinate clause we will
automatically use the past perfect tense.
