1 A scientist uses an oscilloscope to record the traces made from four different sounds. The diagrams show
the traces made from these four sounds.

trace E
(a) Which is the loudest sound? [1]
(b) Which sound has the highest pitch? [1]
(c) The scientist makes a fifth sound. This sound has the same amplitude as the sound that made trace B. It
has the same frequency as the sound that made trace D. Copy trace E and draw the trace that his fifth \
sound makes on the oscilloscope. [3]

2 A boy cycles a distance of 960 m from home to school in 8.0 minutes.

(a) Calculate his average speed for the journey in m/s. [4]
(b) The journey is all along a horizontal road. At the end of the journey the boy is tired because of the work
he has done. Against which force has this work been done? [1]

(a) The distance between the two bridges is measured as 50 m. Suggest an appropriate instrument that they
might use to measure this distance.[1]
(b) The girl on bridge 1 drops a piece of wood into the water. The girl on bridge 2 measures how long it
takes for the piece of wood to reach bridge 2. It takes 400 s to travel between the two bridges.
