ORGANS THAT MAKE UP THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

The brain and the spinal cord make up our central nervous system.
1 The brain controls the nervous system. It is protected by the skull
(cranium) and has three areas:
The cerebrum is the biggest part of the brain. It controls and
interprets the information from our senses. It also controls
intelligence, memory, emotions, imagination and language. It
consists of nerve cells called neurons.
The cerebellum controls movement, coordination and balance.
The brain stem controls involuntary movements such as breathing,
heartbeat or digestion. It connects the brain to the spinal cord.

2 The spinal cord is a long thick tube made up of nerve tissue that
connects the brain to the rest of the body. It is protected by the spinal
column.

The peripheral nervous system is made up of nerves.

Our nerves are made up of cells called neurons and they connect the
spinal cord to the muscles, joints and the skin.
Sensory nerves receive the information collected from our senses and
send this information to the brain, which interprets it.
Motor nerves send messages from the brain to our musculoskeletal (or
locomotor) system.
