Oil cleaning technology

The technology works by first spreading iron powder on the oil patch of an affected seabird. The iron
powder soaks up the oil. A magnetic wand is then passed over the top of the bird’s feathers to
collect the iron powder and oil.

- Reduces the time spent cleaning oil from feathers, and stress sea birds are subjected to
when being cleaned with detergent and water.

Microchips or scanners

- Penguins researchers scan the microchip for a unique number and record data , such as the
burrow number of the penguin in the new microchip scanners. Overtime researchers build a
history of individual penguins and can track any trends across the penguin colony.

How might the experiences have differed from the original ascent of mt Everest?

I think we now have more safety changes, we have upgraded the clothing, materials, tools,
breathing stuff. More people have gone to mt Everest now in comparison years ago, the
performance is so much better now as they have much better equipment. The difficulty would have
decreased as more ladders would have been put and since there is much better equipment, climbing
the Everest would be a bit easier. The jackets have become warmer, there is heated blankets and
sleeping mats. Gloves have advanced to ensure people don’t get frostbite.

- How has technology changed?

The equipment has upgraded over the years, eg; the picks, sun glasses, clothes and radios to
communicate the whereabouts of the group.

- How have contemporary societal relationships changed as a result?
