Ic Engines Vs Electric Motors

Studies show that the demand for electric cars increased by 234% in 2021 compared to 2020,
while the demand for electric bikes increased by 504% in 2021 compared to 2020. The
demand for electric vehicles is increasing but has not yet reached its peak. In place of the
former internal combustion engines, many automakers are remodelling and using electric
engines in the production of cars.

But how do the two differ from one another? Let’s study more about the EV engine and IC
engines in this module.

What is an internal combustion engine?

It is a kind of engine that produces power by igniting air inside the engine with the
combustion of gasoline, oil, or other fuel (such diesel or petrol), and the hot gases that result
are used to drive a piston or perform other tasks as needed.

● An IC engine operates on the premise that the charge that is ignited is placed under
intense pressure inside a combustion chamber.
● The engine's internal process is a phase in the thermodynamic cycle of the object.
● The engine is employed throughout a variety of sectors, including transportation,
aviation, and energy production.
● The IC engine is made up of a number of components, including the cylinder, spark
plug, valves, piston, piston rings, connecting rod, crankshaft, and oil pan.

Internal combustion engine types
Using a spark-ignition engine, the combustion process A compressed gasoline and air
mixture in the ignition chamber of a spark-ignition engine is ignited by a spark plug to start
the vehicle.

Compression ignition engine:

This IC engine does not require a spark plug to function. The heat created by the air and fuel
being compressed ignites the fuel.

Depending on the fuels used—petrol/gas engines: An electric spark is used to ignite gasoline
in this type of IC engine to provide power, and the charge consists of a mixture of fuel and
air.

Diesel engine: As its name implies, this engine burns gasoline that spontaneously ignites
without the use of a spark plug.

Bi-fuel engines: A dual-fuel system, these internal combustion engines may run on either
gasoline or natural gas.

A piston is a sliding component that travels against fluid pressure and is made up of a short
cylindrical body that slides back and forth inside of a cylindrical vessel, depending on the
number of strokes each cycle.

Engine with a four-stroke cycle: The four piston strokes used by the engine are intake,
compression, power, and exhaust. It is the automotive engine that is most frequently used.

Engine with a two-stroke cycle: This engine uses two piston strokes—compression and
expansion—to complete its operational cycle. Both strokes are necessary to rotate the
crankshaft once.

An improved variant of the two-stroke and four-stroke engines is the six-stroke cycle engine.
This particular form of engine has two cylinders, each of which produces two strokes in
addition to the other four, for a total of six strokes every cycle. Additionally, this engine
decreases pollution and increases fuel efficiency.

What is an electric engine?

● Lower weight For instance, the batteries in electric vehicles weigh 450 kilos and have
a 1.5 gallon diesel fuel equivalent amount of energy (4.5 kg).
● Budget-friendly: Electric engines are typically less expensive than internal
combustion engines that run on fuel.

13
● Fuels that are widely accessible for mobile use, such as gasoline and diesel, are
necessary for IC engines to function. Batteries, on the other hand, take 5-8 hours to
charge.
● Because of the existing infrastructure, people can trust it and understand the needs of
IC engine vehicles.

What is an electric engine?

Electricity is converted to mechanical energy by an electric engine. In this, torque is
produced, which aids in the propulsion of automobiles, as a result of the interaction of the
magnetic field of the engine and the electric current in a wire winding. An electric vehicle's
mechanism is as follows:
● Energy conversion is the basis for how electric cars operate.
● This kind of vehicle uses a variety of electric motors or engines in place of a
combustion engine.
● Your car may easily be charged at home or at public charging stations.
● Engine/motor, inverter, drivetrain, batteries, and charging are all components of
electric cars.

Types of electric vehicles

● Automobiles that run exclusively on electricity are referred to as plug-in electric cars
or pure electric cars. This type of car does not emit any emissions because it does not
use gasoline.

14
● Plug-in hybrids are cars that can run on both gasoline and electricity. If your battery
runs out, you can use power and then switch to fuels. This kind of vehicle creates
pollution when it has a gasoline engine, but when it has an electric engine, it doesn't.
● Hybrid-electric cars: The majority of these cars use gasoline. However, there is an
electric battery that is refilled through regenerative braking. By touching a button,
drivers can quickly switch between a petrol and an electric engine.

The advantages of electric motors

● 90% less moving parts are used in EVs.
● The environment is secure since there is no pollution.
● Less upkeep—replacement of tyres, regular wear and tear, etc.
● 100 percent torque delivery capacity.
● A convoluted gear arrangement is not necessary.

Conclude
We are currently going through a shift from internal combustion to electric engines. While
internal combustion engines run on cheap and easily accessible fuels, EV engines are more
environmentally friendly, cost more to buy, but require less maintenance.

For a few more decades, both types of vehicles will be offered, and your best option will
depend on your requirements or price range. Gasoline engines will be used for a very long
time even though electric vehicles may be the way of the future.
