Electrochemistry (CHM 314) 2 units time: 2 hrs

Instructions: Answer any Three (3) questions.

1. (a) State Kohlrausch’s law of independent migration

(b) An experimental data shows that the conductance of AgCl and H 2O is 2.6 x 10-6 and 0.60 x 10-
6
Scm-1 respectively at 250C. calculate the solubility of the sparingly soluble AgCl if the ionic
conductance of its anion and cations are 76.34 and 61.92 Scm -1mol-1 respectively.

2. (a) Relaxation effect affects the mobility of ions in solution. Discuss this phenomenon.
(b) The determination of transport number of ZnCl 2 solution placed in a Hittorf transference
number cell was carried out by passing 1F current through it. Chlorine gas was seen to evolve at
the anode of the cell;
i. Indicate diagrammatically using transport number to show the changes in ion
concentration in all compartments.
ii. Using appropriate equations show the changes obtainable in all compartments.

3. (a) Discuss Electrophoretic effect.

(b) The degree of deprotonation obtained for CaCl 2 solution is 0.82 at 250C and considering the
mobilities of calcium and chlorine ion to be 6.16 x 10 -4 and 7.91 x 10-4 cm-1volt-1sec-1 respectively
at 17.50C. Calculate

ii. The molar conductance of these ions.
iii. The transport numbers of these ions

4. (a) Consider an aqueous solution containing lithium chloride at room temperature with its
limiting ionic conductance for Li+ and Cl- at 36.68 and 76.34 Scm2mol-1 respectively. Estimate
i. The limiting molar conductance for both ions.
ii. The transport number for both ions.
iii. Justify the reason why Li+ ion has the lowest ionic conductance among alkali metals.

(b) With the aid of a graph, estimate the conductormetric titration plots for

i. Strong acid Vs strong base

ii. Weak acid Vs weak base

with it.
