UNIT 1:

AUTHENTIC
ASSESSMENT

EDUC80: ASSESSMENT OF
LEARNING 2
WEEK2
Discuss the nature and
characteristics of
authentic assessment and
related terms
Differentiate Authentic
and traditional
assessment
Examine Lesson plan
content on the presence
of traditional and
AGENDA authentic assessments
Assessment refers to
the process of
WHAT IS AN gathering data and
ASSESSMENT? information about what
Navarro & De Guzman-Santos(2013) students know and can
do.
It is a process of
gathering and organizing
quantitative or qualitative
data into an interpretable
form to have a basis for
WHAT IS AN judgement or desicion-
ASSESSMENT? making.
It is a pre-requisite to
Ubina-Balagtas & Dacanay (2013)
evaluation. It provides the
information which enables
evaluation to take place.
Educational assessment is
the documenting of
measurable activities of the
students. It is the process of
measuring knowledge,
WHAT IS AN skills, attitudes and beliefs.
ASSESSMENT? It is also a tool or method
of obtaining information
Allen (2004); Manarpiis (2020)
from tests or other sources
about the achievement or
abilities of individuals
Information may be sourced through
observation of students during their
learning activities, examining the
results of their learning activities, or
testing their knowledge and skills
Assessment involves review of
evidence of learning such as journal
entries, written work, portfolios, skill
demonstration, performance in
learning activities, test results etc
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS are
products and / or performances
correlated with real-life experiences
MUELLER (2011); NAVARRO & DE
GUZMAN-SANTOS (2013)
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS are
forms of assessment in which
students are asked to perform
real-world tasks that demonstrate
meaningful application
essential knowledge and skills.
of AUTHENTIC
ASSESSMENT
WIGGINS (1987); NAVARRO & DE
GUZMAN-SANTOS (2013) defined
The tasks are either replicas of or
analogous to the kind of
problems faced by adult citizens
and consumers or professionals in
the field
CHARACTERISTICS OF
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
1. Authentic Assessment starts with clear
and definite criteria of performance
made known to the students.

2. Authentic Assessment identifies

strengths and weaknesses, but does not
compare students nor rank their levels of
performance.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
3. Authentic Assessment requires
students to make their own answers to
questions rather than select from given
options as in multiple choice items. and
requires them to use a range of higher
order thinking skills (HOTS)
CHARACTERISTICS OF
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
4. Authentic Assessment does not rely on
ability to recall facts or memorize
details, instead students are asked to
demonstrate skills and concepts they
have learned.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
5. In Authentic Assessment students are
required to demonstrate analytical skills,
ability to integrate what they learn,
creativity, and ability to work in a group,
skills in oral and written communications.

Authentic Assessment values not only the

finished products which are the learning
outcomes, but also the process of
leaning
CHARACTERISTICS OF
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
6. Authentic Assessment changes the
role of students as passive test takers
into becoming active and involved
participants in assessment activities that
emphasize what they are capable of
doing instead
FIRST
Identifying the most important
knowledge and skills that students
should be able to demonstrate as a
result of their learning activities.
PHASES OF
SECOND AUTHENTIC
Determining the criteria and
standards of outcomes performance
ASSESSMENT
Navarro & De Guzman-Santos(2013)
and the acceptable evidence that
may be presented as proof of
outcomes' attainment

THIRD

Implementation of the supporting

activities that will facilitate the
attainment of the desired student
learning outcomes.
FOURTH
Measuring the extent at which the
students are attaining the desired
PHASES OF
learning outcomes. AUTHENTIC
FIFTH ASSESSMENT
Navarro & De Guzman-Santos(2013)
Interpreting the assessment results
and evaluating whether they
indicate attainment of the desired
outcomes and utilizing them for
continuous improvement
TRADITIONAL
The pen-and-paper test
used in assessing
TRADITIONAL knowledge and thinking
ASSESSMENT skills.

AUTHENTIC
DESCRIPTION A mode of assessment that
requires actual demonstration
of skills or creation of products
of learning.

TRADITIONAL
ASSESSMENT
VS. AUTHENTIC
ASSESSMENT
AUTHENTIC
OUTCOME
Direct Evidence
ADVANTAGES
Scoring is objective
Administration is easy
because students can take
the test at the same time
TRADITIONAL
ASSESSMENT
DISADVANTAGES
Preparation of the instrument
is time consuming
Prone to guessing and
cheating
ADVANTAGES
·Preparation of the instrument is
relatively easy
Measures behavior that cannot be
deceived as they are
demonstrated and observed.
AUTHENTIC
ASSESSMENT
DISADVANTAGES
Scoring tends to be subjective
without rubrics
Administration is time
consuming
