A problem-solution essay is a concise segment of text that focuses on identifying a

specific problem and proposing a solution to address it. This type of essay presents the
issue, explains its significance, and offers a viable resolution. It is commonly found
within problem-solution essays or as a standalone paragraph in various forms of writing
where the author aims to highlight and resolve a challenge. Also, it can be found in
various types of writing, such as persuasive essays, business reports, and technical
documents. On top of that, in a problem-solution paragraph, you analyze a problem and
propose a method for solving it. The problem you choose to analyze should be one that
offers some challenges but is still possible to resolve. (vo)

So now let’s move on to its characteristics; we have five;

The first characteristic is A PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE SOLVED. - It is

important to choose a problem that is significant enough to warrant a solution, and one
that can be addressed through practical means. Examples of problems that could be
addressed in a problem-solution essay include environmental issues, social problems,
and public health concerns.

The second characteristic is THESIS STATEMENT THAT IDENTIFIES THE

PROBLEM AND POINTS TOWARD THE SOLUTION. - The thesis statement should
clearly state the problem and indicate the proposed solution. This helps to provide a
clear direction for the rest of the essay.

The third characteristic is the IDENTIFICATION OF SEVERAL POSSIBLE

SOLUTIONS. - It is important to consider multiple solutions in order to weigh their pros
and cons and choose the best option. This also helps to demonstrate that the writer has
thoroughly researched the problem and potential solutions.

The fourth characteristic is SPECIFIC FACTS, DETAILS, EXAMPLES, AND

REASONS INDICATING WHY ONE SOLUTION IS THE BEST. - This helps to establish
credibility and persuade the reader that the proposed solution is the most effective. It is
important to provide evidence and support for the chosen solution.

Finally, AN ANALYTICAL TONE IS IMPORTANT IN PROBLEM-SOLUTION

PARAGRAPHS. - This means that the writer should approach the problem and
proposed solution in a thoughtful, objective, and logical manner. It is important to
consider potential counterarguments and address them in the essay. (vo)

That would be all for characteristics of a problem-solution.
