Bilingual Education
a term that refers to the teaching of academic
content in two languages, in a native and second
language.

Aims of Bilingual Education
Bilingual education is a very ambiguous term which covers many different types of
programmes and schools.
To unify a multilingual society; to bring unity to a multi-ethnic, multi-tribal, or multi-
national linguistically diverse state.
To enable people to communicate with the outside world.
To provide language skills which are marketable, aiding employment and status.
To preserve ethnic and religious identity.
To reconcile and mediate between different linguistic and political communities.
To spread the use of a colonial language, socializing an entire population to a colonial
existence.
To strengthen elite groups and preserve their privileged position in society.
To give equal status in law to languages of unequal status in daily life.
To deepen an understanding of language and culture. 3
Immersion Program
promotes bilingualism with the goal of developing a native-like competence in the
target language without losing fluency in a student's native language.

Maintenance/ Heritage Language


serve the purpose of preserving the ethnic identity, culture, and language of minority
members.

Two-Way/Dual Heritage
children develop dual language proficiency by reviewing instructions in the target
language or the native language.

Mainstream Bilingual
includes international schools and it serves children like patriotic students whose native
language is an international language such as english.
