2. GIVING INSTRUCTION – IMPERATIVE

A. Definisi
Giving instruction / Imperative adalah ungkapan untuk menyuruh, meminta, memerintah, dan
memberikan petunjuk kepada orang lain untuk melakukan sesuatu.

B. Fungsi sosial
Tindakan menyuruh serta menanggapinya, untuk menjaga hubungan interpersonal dengan guru dan
teman.

C. Struktur teks
1. Verbal Instruction

(+) Verb 1 + object

Let’s + V1 + Object

V1 + Object + Please (bisa diawal atau akhir kalimat)

Contoh:
 Open the door!
 Clean the board, please!
 Sweep the floor now!
 Raise your hand!
 Let’s go out!
 Please, listen to me!

(-) Don’t +Verb 1 + object

Contoh:
 Don’t close the window! It’s so hot.
 Don’t mess your friend!
 Don’t come late!
 Don’t litter!
2. Nominal Instruction
Be + adjective/noun/adverb
Please/can you/let’s + be + adjective/noun/adverb

Contoh:
 Be quickly!
 Be quite, please!
 Be careful!
 Be louder when giving opinion.!
  Please be quiet, I’m reading!
 Let’s be honest with each other!

C. Unsur Kebahasaan
 Ungkapan a.l :
Ada 2 jenis ungkapan giving instruction:
1. Command
Contoh:
- Open the windows, please!
- Just wait a minute, please
- Let’s sing a song together!
- Please sweep the floor!
- Wait for seconds!
- Submit your assignment now!
- Shutdown the computer!
- Log in to your facebook account!

2. Prohibition (Larangan) - using No and Don’t

Contoh:
- Do not log out your account!
- Stop smoking/No smoking!
- Don’t enter the room!
- Don’t cheat in the exam!
- No entry!
- Don’t be angry!
- Do not be cheating!
- Don’t be lazy!
