RULE: The sign of a Piel stem verb in the qatal form is a hireq [ ִ ] under the first root
letter and a dagesh forte in the second root letter.
Note: This is your first exposure to some simple symbolism that is used throughout this course. The space
held by a circle signifies a root letter. The space made by signifies a pronoun, either prefixed or
affixed.

RULE: When we see an additional heh on the end of the first person yiqtol forms, the yiqtol form has
been transformed into a cohortative. The cohortative is a type of command concerning oneself and,
perhaps, one’s partner(s). It is the third and final yiqtol variation that makes up the mainline of

24.2d. The imperative, jussive, and cohortative, together make up the mainline of Hortatory Discourse.
Together, the three are called the volitional forms because they all express the speaker’s will or volition. All
three are either yiqtol forms or based on the yiqtol form. Here is a summary of them:
VOLITIONAL FORMS:
Cohorative Imperative Jussive
yiqtol change usually adds ה loses prefix pronoun may shorten

Note: As we become more acquainted with the other verb stems of Hebrew, we will find that the
imperative is not always a mere removal
