Plastics are the most essential commodities in the world and are replacing the metals, wood,

glass, cements and other materials in some application areas. Plastics are easy handling,

resource-saving, non-toxic with esthetically attractive. Oil and gas are the major feedstocks for

plastics, besides sugar and corn as renewable feedstocks. Plastics represent a serious waste-

handling problem, with only 10%–12% of the plastic waste generated worldwide being

regenerated/recycled. After disposal, plastic waste takes very long time to decompose naturally

and impact the environment during the degradation process.

Regeneration of plastics means conversion of plastics with the formation of new monomers,

oligomers or petrochemicals. The process of recovering resource from waste for reuse or

reprocessing is known as recovery which includes collection, sorting and aggregation of

materials.

Recovery and regeneration of plastic waste can reduce the consumption of non-renewable fossil

fuels as feedstock and lower the impact on environment pollution. Recently, regeneration and

recovery of waste plastics have been increasing worldwide with better way of collecting,

segregating and proper processing of the waste. International quality certification with a

transparent monitoring process may lead to plastic regeneration and recovery an attractive

industry with high quality of plastic products in near future.

Reuse of plastics is controversial. Many people favor one time use of plastic materials due to

hygienic reasons; others may support the reuse of it for economic reasons.

But will tis solve the problem? Is the poor garbage disposal a cultural or economic problem?
